Another vote for how amazing it was.

The only part of it that was mediocre was the food. But that's not what you go for.

Burpsandfustles · 26/01/2019 18:45

That the other consideration... There are many places within lap land aren't there and different destinations... So check which one you go too.

Op id like to know if there wasn't somewhere nearer with husky rides and stuff like that without having Togo lapland

TSSDNCOP · 26/01/2019 18:47

We drove, he went pillion.

HouseyMcHouseFace · 26/01/2019 18:49

Agree with food being mediocre. Not bad - just average chips, sausage etc.

I absolutely loved it. Both the dc and I were absolutely exhausted by the end of it though. It’s like Disney but packed into 48hours - we witnessed lots of meltdowns from younger kids.

Yes, the food wasn't great. As a non meat eater DD said the veggie options were awful. She was still eating fish at that point, and the one day they had fish wasn't great either. She ate a lot of Pringles while we were there.

That said, you don't go for the food, and we had a great time.

Fantastic place have been a few times now! Levi is more commercial but still lovely. Just been to Saariselkä and it was absolutely stunning, so rustic. Food is ok lots meatballs, (even for brekkie!) but it is the most amazing place. The northern lights are just a must see. Am already looking at another trip!

You can do a husky sled ride in Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands, OP.

LittleMachine · 26/01/2019 20:15

I can’t tell you not to go because we all absolutely loved it this Christmas! We DIYed our trip to Saariselkä and it was incredible.
DSs are 4 and 7. None of us struggled with the cold in all our gear.
Do it! It’s worth every penny, honestly.

Have been twice, once with DC, brilliant, and once Aurora chasing (without DC) which was beyond words. It was -17 on the first trip and we were fine. The air was dry and we were properly dressed. I wouldn't take an under 7 personally, just too exhausting for them and it's probably too cold.

Whilst we were Aurora chasing it was -35, but again we don't really find it bad at all. There were a couple of older children in the cabin next to us on that holiday too, and they had a whale off a time.

Ohrobin · 26/01/2019 20:52

Do you want to go specifically for Xmas type or just cold weather type holiday. We went last year and going again for our ski holiday and it was cheaper than going yo France or Austria! We booked excursions separately e.g. husky ride, ice hotel and lucky to see northern lights. If you avoid "Xmas" season and go and jan/Feb it's not bad priced! But alcohol & food can be expensive there

There was something on a travel show recently detailing an awful trip people were having. I can't remember the travel group they went with but do your research as it was truly dreadful. With the right company I think it can be fabulous.

Sweetooth92 · 26/01/2019 20:57

We went when I was a child (almost 10) it’s still the most memorable day of my childhood and it was the one think I told my husband we will be doing with our son when older that wasn’t negogiable. It was so magical, the photos are precious and I remember almost everything about it still, 17 years later. Nothing elsewhere will compare to the real deal

HouseyMcHouseFace · 26/01/2019 20:58

I used Santa Claus trips and they were great. I was on the verge of murdering our tour guide when she decided to start another round of Jingle Bells on the transfer coach. My 3yo had been up since 4.30 and had finally fallen asleep Angry. They were all very enthusiastic though. We stayed at a hotel called Holiday Club which also had a pool with a slide and a huge soft play area.

On our winter trip the food wasn't great - we had seen that in advance and took a fair bit with us in our suitcase which saved us some money too. On summer trip food was excellent but different locations less on the tourist trail - Oulu, Ruka and Arola Bears - lovely homemade stews and homemade berry juices, vegetarian dishes etc whereas winter in Rovaniemi was £10 burgers with £4 soft drinks.

Mine were 7 and 5 when we went and both loved it - 5 year old struggled with the cold more than us, he's tiny though but was fine as at the husky rides place there was a restaurant you could go and warm up in. I would say 5 plus, 5-10 is probably ideal age but older kids and adults will love it too. There's also a Swedish Lapland too.
