I’ve just looked it up phonetically and it should be pronounced eck-sim-uh. Sim as in simple.

NotBadConsidering · 26/01/2019 10:06

Atopic dermatitis.

I’m glad you stopped yourself from correcting him. Perhaps he has Scottish friends who pronounce it that way. I do.

Ex-zeema here. I'm Scottish. It was called that by the doctor when I was diagnosed in the 70s so it's just what I have always used.
In truth I do prefer the eck-sim-ah pronunciation but can't seem to get my head round actually using it.

How can it be xma when it has a short 'e' in it?

MeDented · 26/01/2019 10:43

Ex-ma for me too, moved to Scotland 20 yrs ago and the first time I heard Ex Zee-ma I thought wtf?!!!!! Definitely a Scottish thing

Pinkkahori · 26/01/2019 10:43

Eck zee ma here. I'm irish and most people I know pronounce it this way.
Dd has it so I say it quite at lot at times.

80sMum · 26/01/2019 10:44

I say ex-ma. I've heard some people pronounce it ex-er-ma. I've never heard ex-ee-ma.

jusdepamplemousse · 26/01/2019 10:48

EXma.

EckZEEMa really irritates me for some reason.

Only ever heard medics use first pronunciation so assume it’s ‘right’.

Nothisispatrick · 26/01/2019 10:51

Exma. I’ve never heard it pronounced ex zee ma I don’t think.

BW I have a couple of Scottish friends; I don't pronounce words a certain way because of the way they speak Confused. My friend calls what I'd call pop (ie. lemonade) 'juice' and pronounces it 'juss'. I still call it pop, and to me juice is cordial pronounced 'joose'.

I am an ex- HCP and have always heard it said as 'ecksma'.

You misunderstood my meaning. I am Scottish and pronounce it ex zee ma. It would me a dull world or we where all the same. If someone saw fit to correct my pronunciation, I wouldn’t think very highly of them.

Tiggy78 · 26/01/2019 17:24

Eck zee ma - I’m Irish, if that makes any difference.
