Migraine - Aspirin.

I get migraines once or twice a month. They are extremely debilitating and last three days as a rule, during which I am wiped out. Last time at the doctors I was given co-codamol and told to return if they didn't touch it, for further investigation. Anyway a few weeks ago a migraine came on and I was caught short with no pain killers, I ended up taking two soluble aspirin - 25p a pack from Waitrose. The migraine reduced and was gone within four hours. Yesterday another migraine - two aspirin again, migraine reduced hugely, another two aspirin six hours later, migraine gone when I woke up an hour ago, so less than 24 hours for each migraine, where before I couldn't get rid of it for 72 hours no matter what I took. I've consulted Dr Google who told me of a study that showed high dose aspirin could have a marked effect on reducing migraine pain. Just wondering if anyone else had had this outcome or even heard of it? I just can't believe that a couple of aspirin could make such a difference.

Yes, apparently aspirin works well. I can't believe your Dr sent you away with co-codamol, you need some kind of triptan tablets. I started off with sumatriptan but take rizatriptan now.

I know I need something more, I think because it was my first time presenting he didn't really look too deeply into it. I've been suffering them this badly for about two years but they weren't happening enough to justify a doctor's visit, I thought anyway. Will try and get back in a week or two.

I ended up in A&E with a 3 day migraine & vomiting. The doctor suggested 3 x soluble aspirin. I thought he was a patronising git. It worked in 20 mins. It doesn’t always work for me, but if my triptans don’t, I try it.

You can take 3 soluble at once. Soluble meant to be quicker absorbing. Wink

Yes, I’ve had similar experience. It doesn’t always work, but I’ve found aspirin helps reduce the “aftershocks” even if it doesn’t stop the actual migraine.
Does anyone else have that btw? Actual physical bruising after a migraine (mines is usually on back of head low down)? And all dizzy and weak.

DustyMcDustbuster · 26/01/2019 05:17

I get that. In “occipital” area - back of skull where it meets neck.

I also get this weird thing where my skin is super sensitive. If I run a bath after a migraine, getting in my skin feels sore (kind of like sunburn). Confused

Sumitriptan was what I had in the past along with stemetil gel patches.
I think it is in a nasal spray form. If you are having them 2 x month and they are debilitating you need to see your doctor. Discuss treatment options.
Possibly prophylaxis with Pizotifen .... but this can lead to weight gain .

I take 900mg aspirin or 800mg ibuprofen in the early stages and if that doesn’t work progress to triptans. Sometimes the aspirin works on its own. It’s also good for migraine hangover the next day.

Heard some one discussing cream of tartar the other day . You put some under your tongue. It does help some. It is the potassium in it .

BillywilliamV · 26/01/2019 06:14

Sumatriptan works like a miracle for my migraines, go back to your GP and get a prescription.

My 13 year old has just started getting migraines, one in December so bad she was in hospital, current one been very ill for 6 days and counting. Too young for aspirin but that's interesting, they said initially ibuprofen which barely touches it but now have triptan, not tried yet. Also are suggesting hormone meds if continues.

The combination of Asprin, sugar and caffeine works very well for me in an emergency. 2 Asprin with full fat Coke.

tangledyarn · 26/01/2019 07:39

Yeah I was told to take 3 soluble aspirin at the start of a migraine btbmy neurologist. I think it works really well for some people!

1fluffydoodle · 26/01/2019 07:42

3 aspirin and a sugar based cola drink asap

Imsosorryalan1 · 26/01/2019 07:48

I take propanalol as a migraine preventative, couldn't recommend it more. 1 tablet every other day and I've gone from 4 migraines a month to none in 10 momths

Lightsdown · 26/01/2019 07:50

900mg asprin at first sign wuth back up sumatriptin is a what my go advises. I add in Coke too if i can get hold of it. Co-odamol? Wtaf! Does he not know that migranes are not just about pain.

krazipan · 26/01/2019 07:53

My GP recommends 900mg Aspirin initially as well. It works really well most of the time. I do also take Sumatriptan if that fails.
