Appendix removal

My husband had his appendix removed today. Has anyone had this done as an adult? If so, what helped you recover? I'm just trying to be as helpful as I can for when he comes home (hopefully tomorrow). Anything in particular that helped? Mainly I'll be spending my time stopping DS(1) from climbing on him(!!) but what else can I do?

How big was the incision? That's the most important thing. Mine is about 7 inches, because they couldn't find any inflammation. So they hoicked out quite a lot of my innards, knocking my bladder loose. That's a very weird sensation.
If it's a keyhole, he'll need two weeks off heavy lifting. Oh, and forbid The Dressing Gown of Doom.

Just keyhole thankfully! Ooh that doesn't sound pleasant! He literally does heavy lifting for a job (100kgs multiple times a day) so I'm making sure he's 100% before he goes back whether he likes it or not! Thank you

Six weeks off at those weights. If you don't mind me saying so, that's an insane amount to be lifting, and definitely illegal under manual handling law.

Posted too soon...unless he's a drayman, who have the proper training.

Depends really. I've known people back at work within the week but I needed weeks off and was still in significant pain 9 months later, and the hospital said I was still within the range of normal.

I was in hospital five days, started with keyhole but ended up with big incision. Desk job and I needed five weeks off. It was a good six months before I felt like me again

I had it out as an adult and was pretty much back to normal the next day, everyone deals with these thinhs differently and could take longer to recover.

He's doing really well today. He generally heals really well and quickly but I'm going to be putting my foot down about rest because he'll push himself too much.
Re the lifting he's had the proper training and he doesn't have to lift anything he doesn't feel capable of doing.
I've made him book some more time off and if he isn't 100% he won't be going back after that either until he's totally back to normal. Thanks for all the responses!
