Any tips on getting through the day?

I posted this in pregnancy earlier but haven’t had many responses, so I’ll try again..

I’m currently 12 weeks pregnsnt. Morning sickness started when I was 10 weeks, along with dizzy spells and tiredness due to lack of sleep (sickness waking me up in the night). My GP signed me off work for two weeks due to sickness and tiredness. My symptoms haven’t improved (if anything I feel worse!), my sick paper runs out today and the GP is reluctant to extend my sick note for another week, so it looks like I’ll be back in work on Monday.

I work in a large office (Civil Service) and the toilet is two corridors away from my desk. I’m thinking of buying a small bin to take in with me because I know I won’t make it to the toilet in time.

I’m doing the usual eating little and often, plain foods and lots of ginger biscuits. I have very little energy and all I want to do is sleep. Does anyone have any tips to help me cope?

Hiya,

I suffered with sickness all through my pregnancy it’s horrible . Can you talk to work about adjusting your hours . Rest is really important . Also has the doctor mentioned medication?

Look up www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk loads of info on there including about medication if you choose to go down that route. They also have a volunteer mentor system. DM me if you like . I know It’s horrible and depressing x

Thanks for your reply.

The doctor was very dismissive... she basically told me that I’ve just got to get on with it because sickness is a normal part of pregnancy.

I’m not sure if adjusting my hours will help. Work are very flexible anyway, office hours are 7am-6pm and I can work whatever hours hours I want between those times, and we have the option of using flexi if we want to leave early. My sickness isn’t worse at any particular time of day, it’s pretty much constant nausea and dizziness, with actual vomiting about 5-6 times a day Sad

Thank you for the link, I’ll have a look Smile

Look you can't work. Simple as that. Keep a log of your vomiting and weakness. I had that and no way could l work. The vomiting l might have managed but the weakness..no! You might faint in work. How do you travel? Can you see another doctor?
This may pass at 14 weeks so surely they can give you a cert until it passes.
You have my sympathy. Its truely awful.

You need to see another doctor. You can’t work like this. Sounds horrendous Sad.

Check out the Hyperemesis thread. They have links to NICE guidelines and you can then show that to your GP. I think if it is disrupting your life considerably, you are entitled to medication and if they refuse, you can ask to be referred to a specialist.

If you are vomiting so frequently, you could end up dehydrated and very unwell. I have been sick, but it's the constant nausea that's got me and I cannot get out of bed some days.

I drive to work.. a 15/20 minute journey depending on traffic. I’ve avoided driving as much as I can the past two weeks because I just don’t trust myself to not have a dizzy spell.

Oops posted too soon!

The 5-6 episodes of vomiting are over a whole day.. it tends to start early hours in the morning and settle down in the evening. In between I feel exhausted and dizzy, but I am managing to keep all fluids and small meals down, so I know that it’s not as severe as HG. The doctor told me that she’d only consider a sick note if I was close to hospitalisation, which I know I’m not.

I just don’t understand how one doctor can give me a two week sick note without even speaking to me, and another refuses because I’ve just got to get on with it. It’s so frustrating Angry

Go and see another doctor. You can't work at the moment, simple as that.
