Is it odd to have a surprise party for a 6 yo?

DS is 6. He has been invited a a surprise birthday party for a child in his class after school next week and the child's house. He'll go - but does anyone else thing this is weird? Either I have to get a 6yo to keep a secret from his classmate, or I have to tell him after school that he is doing something unexpected that night, which isn't brilliant for our general routine where my kids usually like to know that morning what is happening after school. Plus isn't half the fun of a party at that age the looking forward to it?

Yes weird

Very weird. The idea of a party is enough excitement without having to add the surprise aspect. Plus at that age the build-up is the best part!

I think that is quite strange for a 6 year old. I probably wouldn't tell my DC anything about the party until I collected them from school, for fear that they would reveal the secret!
Maybe the birthday boy gets overly stressed and upset if he has to think about it in advance, and copes better if it is just presented to him as a fait accompli. Only thing I can think of.

Could be the mum doesn't want child getting over excited or something.
Maybe its to do with fear of nobody turning up.

Maybe re turning up - i suppose they could have had that experience before. I do not know the family well. It would be better if it were a weekend so I could at least tell my child after school on the friday.(All about me me me)
