Just read this on the BBC.
I’m not particularly active on social media so it’s not exactly like worlds will collide for me or anything, but it still feels a bit uncomfortable. I don’t have Instagram anyway, but I do have WhatsApp and FB. I use WhatsApp loads - I have family abroad so it makes it really easy to send messages and share photos in a way that is private/relatively secure but more responsive than constantly emailing. I’m also part of a few groups, again which I prefer because they’re more private.
I have an FB account which I opened because when I joined my current company a few years back, they had a group for new joiners to get to know about the company, get to know each other etc. I decided that would be useful and it was, but since then I’ve not really had a use for it. My profile is just my name and picture (a very normal safe picture that I use everywhere so have accepted it’s in the public domain). I thought about deleting my FB account because I don’t really use it, DH suggested there’s no rush as I may find it useful for something else and I agreed.
Anyway, this news makes me think I definitely want to delete my FB account - like I said, hardly use it but given how I set it up I am mainly connected with work colleagues and I tend to ignore Messenger. I don’t want people on FB being able to WhatsApp me without having my phone number! Most of my FB connections aren’t actually friends and wouldn’t be able to WhatsApp me now.
I have no idea what the integration actually means, as there’s not much detail, but I don’t know if even with deleting my FB whether people could ‘search’ for you on WhatsApp, for example?
Why can’t they just leave it be?! Does anyone else find this off putting?
