Can people take back money paid via PayPal?

I'm trying to sell something on facebook and offered local collection, but someone is very keen for me to post it and says they'll pay with paypal. If I get the money first, and it definitely goes through to my account, is there any way they could scam me as a result?
They are very pushy with the messages etc, which makes it feel a bit odd. It's a fair bit of money and I don't want to lose it.
I suggested bank transfer but they want paypal...

If you transfer the money straight out of your PayPal account to your bank account they can’t.

HirplesWithHaggis · 25/01/2019 17:42

I think they can claim they haven't received the goods, and paypal will refund them. If you've moved the money to your bank account, paypal will hassle you for it. Don't do it.

PickleFish · 25/01/2019 17:42

thanks. I'm not sure I even know how to do that, but I guess it can't be hard. I've always just used paypal to pay with, as it comes directly from my card that way.

oh ok ,that's good to know. I'll push for transfer then. If they're genuine, you'd think they'd be able to do that - if not online, then at least by going to their bank

Once you've withdrawn it from PayPal no they can't.

In these scenarios, people want to pay by PayPal because it's more secure than a bank transfer.

For example. They pay, you don't send it, they can claim it back as it is classed as a purchase

PickleFish · 25/01/2019 17:45

but if I had proof of postage that I'd sent it, then I'd be OK?

Do not do this

If they request their money back via PayPal, they'll get it. You'll then be in a deficit and you WILL be required to pay this money

NotANotMan · 25/01/2019 17:45

They can, because PayPal will refund them and you will owe PayPal

Don't do it

MegaBat · 25/01/2019 17:46

No.

You are probably being scammed.

I repeat, do not do it. If you do, the risk is you'll effectively pay someone to take your item. So it's your choice.

PickleFish · 25/01/2019 17:46

ok, seems like a consensus then. They'll have to collect or transfer. I just get a dodgy feeling about him, so I'm not willing to risk it.

Don't do it. They'll either send you a spoof link to show the money pending or they'll claim they haven't received it and PayPal will pay them back.

NEVER pay by PayPal when a buyer is being pushy about using it.

MegaBat · 25/01/2019 17:47

Previous poster is entirely wrong in saying once you've taken it from your PayPal account, they can't request it back. That's totally wrong advice - I do wish people wouldn't comment on something they clearly don't know.

gamerchick · 25/01/2019 17:48

And in your case state it's cash on collection only and don't deviate.

soulrider · 25/01/2019 17:49

Unless they pay by PayPal gift they can claim the money back

GrandmaSteglitszch · 25/01/2019 17:49

Send it Tracked and Signed For. Find out the cost first and add it on to the price they have to pay.

Or tell them, No.

MegaBat · 25/01/2019 17:50

Doesn't matter if you send it via a gold plated carrier pigeon. PayPal fall on the side of the buyer

PickleFish · 25/01/2019 17:52

Thanks, all.

Have said no. Cash on collection, or prior bank transfer, only. No reply, which makes me think they weren't really genuine.

Why does everyone assume this is a scam? The normal way to do things on eBay is for people to pay for things via PayPal, then you post the goods (signed for delivery).

Lost5stone · 25/01/2019 17:54

I'm on a fair few Facebook selling groups and the rules tend to be never never pay by bank transfer as it's not protected, always pay paypal good and services so I can see why they want to pay PayPal. But I also know as a seller sometimes PayPal hold the money until the buyer approves all was ok (I think that was on my first ever sale)

Wouldn't bother if you are confident it will sell locally anyway

PickleFish · 25/01/2019 17:55

I think it's different through eBay, as then you have eBay as a moderator in the disputes, and they will accept proof of posting as evidence.

I've just never done it independently, when it's something advertised through facebook.
