Meatballs that are like ikea meatballs?

Ilovecrumpets · 25/01/2019 11:36

Sorry but random but my eldest ( somewhat fussy eater) loves ikea meatballs whilst rejecting my lovingly home made ones or other more ‘mince texture’ ones I’ve bought.

Given I loathe ikea, don’t drive and therefore getting there would be a nightmare and not worth it for meatballs alone - does anyone know of any with a similar texture that aren’t too bad content wise?

I thought Aldi German (I think?) meatballs were similar.
Kids disagreed mind you

SoupDragon · 25/01/2019 11:41

You do need to look for "Swedish meatballs" rather than the standard minced ones that are basically little burger balls. I get some from Ocado that are similar to Ikea ones but I'm sure I've had a different brand from Tescos before

AveEldon · 25/01/2019 11:42

Aldi or Lidl are worth a try
Tesco sell an own brand version

Scan brand were the closest match but they seem to have disappeared from everywhere

Also the gravy will make a difference assuming your kids have it!

GreenThing · 25/01/2019 11:44

Aldi ones, in the fridge near the german hams and chesses, are very similar.

They are pre-cooked, so only need heating through.

As long as I go easy on the heating they pass for my insanely fussy and texture/taste sensitive autiscic son.

They sell frikadellen too.

LittleSwede · 25/01/2019 11:48

Swedish meatballs are made with a mixture of beef and pork mince which makes them softer than plain beef meatballs. They are often lightly seasoned with allspice which gives them their unique flavour.

Most supermarkets used to sell Swedish meatball but must admit I haven't seen any lately. Ocado used to sell some under their Scandinavian food section but not anymore unfortunately.

Try larger supermarkets or worst case order from Totally Swedish Smile

missnevermind · 25/01/2019 11:53

Iceland do them in a little blue bag in the freezers by the burgers.
We were the same in our house everybody loved the IKEA meatballs but nobody was able to shop there regularly.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 25/01/2019 11:54

My dad makes them, along with using a mix of pork and beef he includes breadcrumbs which have been soaked in seasoned milk, this gives them a very different texture from regular meatballs. My super fussy DD absolutely loves them.

Ilovecrumpets · 25/01/2019 11:54

Thanks everyone!

He doesn’t have the gravy and is very particular Hmm. Will give some of these a try!

Failing that may have to see if any of my friends are doing an ikea trio in the near future!

Ocado used to sell some under their Scandinavian food section but not anymore unfortunately.

They do still sell them. Two versions. I get the one just labelled "pork meatballs"

This is the recipe I found online - disclaimer, I've never actually tasted the IKEA ones but the reviews for the recipe claimed that they taste very similar:

Meatballs
1/2 lb ground beef
1/2 lb ground pork
1 egg
1/2 cup cream (half and half) or 1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup water - add gradually
1 small onion, finely chopped
1/4 cup breadcrumbs (or toasted panko, crushed)
2 small cold boiled yukon gold potatoes
2 tablespoons butter
salt
white pepper
1 dash allspice (optional)
Sauce:
1/2 cup half milk, half water
1 cup low sodium beef broth
1/4 teaspoon soy sauce
1 tablespoon white flour
1 tablespoon butter
salt, to taste
white pepper

Fry the onion till golden in a couple of tablespoons of lightly browned butter.
Mash the two potatoes.

Mix all the ingredients until meatball consistency.
Flavour with salt, white pepper and (optional) a little finely crushed allspice.
Shape the mixture into relatively large, round balls and transfer to a floured cutting board.
Fry them slowly in plenty of butter.

Cream Sauce:
Melt butter in pan and add flour, whisk till golden brown and flour is cooked.
Add Beef Stock and Cream until desired thickness.
Season well with salt and pepper.
Serve the meatballs with the sauce, freshly boiled potatoes, and

Agree with soaking breadcrumbs and making it a pork added. Also do you have a food processor? I once tried making meatballs in there and it made them extremely soft and a bit processed-tasting - very much like IKEA ones!

LittleSwede · 25/01/2019 12:00

SoupDragon, ohhhh, thank you for sharing that! I didn't see any when I did my last order.

Ilovecrumpets · 25/01/2019 12:01

Thanks so much everyone - yes got a food processor so if all else fails will try making some. It’s definitley that ‘processed’ texture he likes

Was a, meatfree Swedish balls are identical In taste and texture. I love the things.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 25/01/2019 12:08

Quorn Swedish meatballs are lovely.

milliememum · 25/01/2019 12:13

Scan meatballs the best and they only now sold in Iceland ( the shop) I had to email the company as my youngest dd loved them Smile

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 25/01/2019 12:13

Our IKEA sells bags of their (frozen) meatballs in the food section.

makingmiracles · 25/01/2019 12:17

Tesco definitely sells them, as do Sainsburys, they are normally in the meat section near mince/burgers etc, they are labelled as Swedish meatballs and only need 2-3 mins swishing around in a hot frying pan to heat them a small they’re pre cooked, I love them!

WFTisgoingoninmyhead · 25/01/2019 12:18

Ikea sells them.

kenandbarbie · 25/01/2019 12:21

If you get them in the ikea food section you don't need to walk all round, you can just go into the food bit and out again.

mogtheexcellent · 25/01/2019 12:21

Currently sat in IKEA eating meatballs. They are yum.

SoupDragon · 25/01/2019 12:33

LittleSwede it looks like the red packet is new alas it has N introductory offer on it. The blue ones I've had for ages and although they aren't labelled Swedish they taste like it. (They don't come up on a search for. Swedish meatballs though)

MotherWol · 25/01/2019 12:41

Iceland - these ones groceries.iceland.co.uk/k-c3-b6ttbullar-swedish-meatballs-900g/p/61206. They're identical to the Ikea ones. The sauce is basically just beef gravy with a splash of cream, and redcurrant sauce can be substituted for lingonberry.

BarbaraofSevillle · 25/01/2019 13:35

Quorn do Swedish meatballs, you can get them in Asda, probably some other supermarkets too. No idea if quorn is healthier than processed meat, that nice Mr Farah says it is.

No idea what they taste like, I have bought some but not got round to eating them yet.
