And research etc. Not games as such but dd3 (8) likes to play on scratch jr or maths games. She will share it with ds(6) and nominally dh.
Looking under £200, less if possible.

Would they have the type of homework at that age that needs computer at home? Isn't it more workbooks/sheets of sums etc?

TheDrsDocMartens · 25/01/2019 09:38

She’s had a few ‘write facts about Paris’ type things lately. And she’s always wanting to look things up. Came home yesterday wanting to do some coding games so think a family device would be useful.

Dh and I both only have work phones etc so don’t like to let them use them for long.

Ds2 who’s 8 has a chromebook. We got it through school, every child in his class one.

I’m confused over Chromebooks/windows/android. Apple way too expensive but that’s what I know

I think a laptop is better. My DS's primary maths homework site wasn't compatible with the iPad we had

A refurbished thinkpad or dell can be comfortably under 200, will be more than powerful enough for anything you want to do (and for a kid way more useful than a chromebook in that you can play easily Minecraft... depending on your attitude to that)

TheDrsDocMartens · 25/01/2019 10:19

So Windows is going to be best then?

Presumably the OP wouldn't be asking if this was the case.

DD9's homework is often internet based. It's great they are being taught how to properly do research on the Internet, it's a skill many adults lack.

OP, we find a tablet is more convenient, but the laptop is used sometimes for doing presentations and stuff.

There's not a really a "best", as it depends on what you want to use it for, what your specific needs are, and given the budget, what compromises you might want. Chromebooks at the price compromise on the software they run and small screen sizes. That might be an advantage though in other situations.

Because windows will give you the flexibility to run other software, that's the main reason I'm suggesting it.

For me, unquestionably with the price, it's a refurbished thinkpad

(depending on your screen size preferences)

(no connection with the company other than as a customer, many other refurbishers are available)

Thanks they look good. I’m open to recommendations as I have no idea!

We just bought Ds, a Lenovo laptop, from AO.Com. Its great for homework and games, and looks good. I think it was about £200, but they do really good finance deals.

TheDrsDocMartens · 25/01/2019 16:12

Any opinions/experience of this?
Dh suggesting touch screen might be useful...

Ok the review weren’t great on that.

If we want a touch screen I think we are aiming at tablet with keyboard. Any more advice?
