If you learned someone you were dating (or considering dating) had been in prison?

After a previous abusive relationship I think it's totally reasonable to be upfront and honest and say "I really want this relationship to deepen, but I think in order for me to get real trust I need to know the full history of what happened with you 22 years ago"
If you don't then sit down for hours, talking about what happened, the court case, what life was like in prison but get a cagey response then I'd leave.

25 years ago is a long long time. people make mistakes and change I'm guessing he was quite young?
I would probably do two things.
speak to them see what they say say I want all cards on the table and then I would do a search if it matched up then I would consider our future if it didnt he would be gone.

Why don’t you just ask them? If they’ve been up front about it, just ask for a few more details. It sounds a bit vague, “something to do with a vehicle”. I agree with PP that if you get a reasonably full disclosure then I’d trust them a lot more than if the response is bad or cagey. IME when people are cagey about stuff like that, it usually means they’ve not been strictly honest about what they were convicted of because they know it will be looked on badly. I’ve encountered that a few times in a professional capacity.

Personally I’d probably not date them, and I’d certainly have asked more questions when they volunteered it.

As PP said, Clare’s Law disclosure is only for DV, they won’t give you a rundown on their criminal history, it’s not like a DBS check! Although s I understand it, after 25 years the conviction is almost certainly spent, unless it was for something dreadful.
