Where can we go in half term? Boys aged 11 and 6. We've done London and fancy somewhere new, needs to be easy to get around and manageable on a tight budget!

Hit me with suggestions of places to go and things to do there! Smile

We went to Liverpool a couple of years ago. Brilliant museums, the docks, searching for the lambanana’s, ferry on the Mersey, trip to Crosby beach for the beach sculptures. Loved it.

York, Castle museum, York minster, railway museum, walk the city walls,

fancynancyclancy · 24/01/2019 23:15

Went to Belfast in Oct, really liked it although we had younger kids.

atomicnotsoblonde · 24/01/2019 23:22

Wow that was quick! Liverpool and York, do you need a car? Would be nice to go on the train. Would you suggest stopping in a city centre hotel or air bnb?

Belfast, where about did you stay? We're catholic. It would feel like a real holiday on a plane!

Although not a single parent I’ve taken my 2 kids away for weekends by myself to the following places; York, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee. The kids favourite hotel chain are Novotel & Apex as they have pools and Novotel has a pancake machine.

We went to Oxford in the October half term. Stayed in the travelodge at the park and ride (v cheap). Around £2.50 to get into the centre (kids free) on the p & r bus. Went round the natural history and the Pitts river museums. Only there one day so wasn’t enough time really. The Ashmolean was closed on the Monday so couldn’t visit. It’s all really compact and walkable.

Village hotels have a £29 deal on at the moment that covers half term - a couple of cities included. (? Manchester / Birmingham) they have swimming pools which mine love at a hotel.

MrsWobble3 · 24/01/2019 23:26

Depends a bit where home is but Brighton could be worth a look.

Jade308 · 24/01/2019 23:27

Bristol, everything is in/around the centre.

Lots of free museums, cheap ferry rides and great for kids

fancynancyclancy · 24/01/2019 23:28

Catholic here too (parents from the Republic) & I had never been to the North before. We did the taxi tour of the murals, hired a car & did lots of game of thrones sites, titanic exhibition & the causeway. Flights were cheap (we went Oct half term) & stayed in the Cathedral Quarter which is the best for shops, restaurants & nightlife. Would love to go back without kids and enjoy the nightlife!

You'll be safe enough in Belfast 🙂 Around the university /Queens Quarter is a good place to stay. You can walk to the city centre, botanic gardens and Ulster museum and can easy get the hop on/hop off bus. You'd also be near the train if you wanted to head out to the folk and transport museum or the coast.
If you'd prefer not to fly how about Portsmouth? The naval dockyard is great for kids.

FurzeandHarebells · 24/01/2019 23:30

Glasgow is pretty cool.

There’s an underground and good bus services.

Great museums (mostly free)

Kelvin grove art galleries
Riverside Museum (transport museum and tall ship)
Modern Art Gallery
Huntarian Museum
The Provans Lordship (oldest house in the city)
The People’s Palace

The Glasgow Science centre is fantastic.
The are loads of wonderful parks
There are walking tours and bus tours.
Fantastic shopping and places to eat.

Plenty to do in a weekend.

Tubbykins · 24/01/2019 23:33

Bath? Easy to walk around.

Bournemouth? Beach, pier, arcade.

Brandnewstart · 24/01/2019 23:43

We really enjoyed Birmingham. If you stay near the airport the hotels are cheap and you can get the train into the centre. There’s a big science museum and my two boys loved a very cheap all you can eat buffet!

atomicnotsoblonde · 25/01/2019 17:36

Great idea so I'll start researching. In midlands so central for getting about! Feeling excited!

Single parent here. Weve done:

Edinburgh (great and you can go by bus quickly to the sea)

Manchester (for Man Utd tour)

Brighton - beach, pier, aquarium etc

Stratford - youth hostel, theatre, boating on the river, butterfly farm

caffeinated · 25/01/2019 23:04

Yes everything in Liverpool is walkable once you’re in the centre

DimProblem · 25/01/2019 23:15

Newcastle is a breeze for getting about, thanks to a great metro system. There’s a good selection of museums, the coast, the quayside and a really excellent choice of restaurants.

Further afield, there’s a short train trip to Durham or lovely countryside to the north - Alnwick and Bamburgh castles, if you fancy location spotting (excellent if you have Harry Potter fans).

Just pack some warmer clothes. It can still be on the chilly side at half term. But worth it!
