Do you think its possible to go to Vancouver via NYC without it costing a fortune?

Invited to a wedding in Vancouver next year. Relatives want to “stop off” in Nyc on the way. Im not complaining as i love the place. Financially does it make sense though? I dont even know how it would work. Do you book a return to nyc and separate Canada flights or can you fly straight back to london from Canada?

If you use Skyscanner you can try both ways. Either look for a return flight to NY and a return flight from NY to Vancouver or use the multiple flight option to look at flying back from Vancouver. It's too early to get flights for next year though but you could get some idea based on similar dates for this year

Hi, I got an amex gold card and saved up my points - my husband and I went to NYC premium economy with Virgin for free! (Obviously you pay taxes still)

Some airlines hub in Newark so you could get a through ticket with a stopover but note it's going to make for a very long journey on the journey you aren't visiting New York. It's worth also looking at specialist websites who do reasonably priced singles. Note if you fly directly to Vancouver you don't pass over New York so you are adding considerable mileage which probably will be reflected in price. We flew ba straight to Vancouver and got a steal of a deal last year, so see the prices is what I'm saying!

You can fly with Norwegian Air to NYC for as little as £165 each. They are a low cost carrier, so look at the extras you might need to pay, but they are decent and you don't get penalized for only wanting a one way ticket

NYC to Vancouver is a long flight, but you can find flights for a couple of hundred quid each

Vancouver to London flights can be about £500

It's certainly possible, and depending on the time of year and whether you can take advantage of flash sales etc, you might be able to get some really good prices. But it is likely to be much more expensive than simple return flights (though you get to spend time in New York!)

Having said, that, if you just want a 24 hour stop in NY, there are some routes that transit JFK. Eg BA and Finnair do a code share flight from HEathrow to Vancouver via JFK. Expedia offers a 3hr30min lay over, so you land at 5pm and depart again at 8.30pm, but you could investigate whether you could land at 5pm one day and not leave until the next? Those flights could be much less - I found one in Nov for £400

No, they have never been to nyc so we will need at leastthree nights. I. Just trying to think whether its worth doing it in one trip or not.

Try costing a multi city trip with flights and hotels on expedia and on ba.com.
London nyc / nyc Vancouver / Vancouver London

It's worth doing in the sense that you won't have to spend all that time travelling for the Vancouver wedding AND for a separate NYC trip

But if time is less important than saving money, then it will probably work out cheaper to get bargain flights to Vancouver and bargain flights to NYC for a different trip, particularly if you can be flexible about the time of year to travel to NYC

Something else to consider is the jet lag thing: you would be doing two big time zone jumps in a short period of time, which may well cause havoc with your body clock for the wedding bit of the trip. Depends really how badly or well you tend to cope with it

EachandEveryone · 25/01/2019 08:53

I need to get back straight after the wedding so any extra travelling will be before hand.
