Hi, On another subject, as I mentioned in my last question I am overweight, and I am currently changing my lifestyle to lose wieght, so far only a couple of pounds but in the right direction. Now, from my BMI I have been told by my doctor that I am morbidly obese, not Ideal and it probably will take me a good few months to get the weight off, if not a year. Am I a write off untill my BMI is to what it should be or is it possible for me to get pregnant while being bigger but activly losing weight in the process?? Anyone know anything about this? I am only 4 months TTC and the first 2 were not really trying just seing how it goes but im now obsessed and desprate to get this weight off! Any thoughts would help.

Do try and lose some weight, it would help you in so many ways, it is very hard.
I had the same problem as you, it was a viscous circle, eating to compensate for not conceiving.

And I expect people have said that it is healthier and safer for you and baby if you weigh less when pregnant
We all know this already, does not help.

If its any help then I got pregnant with a bmi of 44 easily. I've had the healthiest pregnancy of all in my peer group but that's down to luck. I've only put on 3lb over the nine months.

If I could do it again then I would aim to be at less than a bmi of 35 as there are so many more options for giving birth. So I would say give it a go but keep on with the weight loss.

Weight is only one aspect of your health. Do you have good nutrition and enough exercise? I'd take BMI with a pinch of salt, for example every now and again they revise the categories which just puts loads of people who weren't 'obese' before into that category, etc.

You know if you're in good shape and look after yourself, and whether you can afford to delay TTC for a year or two while you slim down. Pregnancy puts strain on the body so if you're heavy and unhealthy it's harder and raises risk, but it'd be worth looking at just how much risk is increased so you really know what you're dealing with.

Thanks, I am going to continue to lose weight. I might put TTC on hold for a few months get a chunk of this wieght off and then try again so I will be healthier and less risk. It makes me sad but, I dont want any issues and having more birth options would be nice. And if im being honest I dont think i am going TTC untill a few stone is off anyway. ITs all so disheartnening, I am a comfort eater and lost my mum when i was 23 which isnt an excuse but I think ive comfort eaten my way through life for the past 3 years! but time for a change if i want a baby!

I am classed as overweight/obese. I also have Pcos. We had been trying for about 18 months when I went to see a fertility doctor who told me that all my results and 'insides' were fine, and there was no reason I couldn't conceive. Therefore I would need to be referred for IVF if I didn't catch naturally. Before I could even be considered for IVF I needed to lose about 4 stone and quit smoking for atleast 6 months. I started slimming world, and 2 weeks later I found out I was pregnant!!! I was about 5 weeks pregnant, and had no idea.
So there you have it, you can conceive
naturally whilst being overweight.. It just isn't healthy and can come with lots of risks! I am classed as a high risk pregnancy and I have to see a consultant and have extra scans etc. I am now 25 weeks and baby is fine so far!!
Keep up with the weight loss, and use a baby as your motivation and focus. Good luck xxx

Lose weight first. If you don't do it now you probably won't.

Yeah I deffinetly on the case with the diet, I dont smoke only drink on social occasions, its jsut the weight which is so annoying. I want to be in the best shape possible so ive started slimming world too. I have joined a gym, a baby is deffinetly my motivation! i hope to get as much weight off and get a positive test one day! thanks for the suport

Hi @19CLT92 I'm in the same boat as you! My BMI puts me at morbidly obese although I have lost 20 pounds since November (think some of that may have trickled back on over Christmas though...). We've just started ttc baby number 1, on our first cycle and I don't know whether to just carry on trying or lose weight first!

I'm 32 so I don't really want to put it off for too long cause I know with my weight AND age I could be fighting an uphill battle!

I'm too scared to go to the GP cause I know they'll just be horrible about my weight and not constructive! It's horrible!

I was (and still am Blush) morbidly obese when I conceived my two, also with PCOS. Can't remember exact BMI, but probs 43 or 44 I think. I'm lucky that it hasn't apparently affected my fertility so I don't think you necessarily need to worry on that score.

It does, though, as someone said above, limit your options for things like water births and you will have to grow a thick skin as your weight and therefore your risk category will be constantly referenced throughout your pregnancy!

When I had my second I made an appt with the head of he midwife led unit to argue my case that even though I was fat I thought I should be allowed a water birth as there was no other high risk factor that would preclude it. Turns out they are literally just worried about their ability to lift you out of the water if you faint or something. I had to bring my sturdy DH in to show he would be able to hoist me if needed, and to demonstrate that despite being a porker I was quite lithe enough to get myself in and out of the tub. They agreed in the end so worth pursuing if you get the same 'computer says no' response. All immaterial in the end as I went over and was induced on a drip so not allowed my water birth anyway 😭

Good luck!

Yeah it's difficult decision, ive decided not to stop because I've done research and you can lose weight whilst pregnant and I think ill be even more careful about my eating knowing there's a baby in there, I think when you are bigger it takes longer so I'm just going to smash the weigh loss, and hope for the best. I hope th figure it out soon too x

That's good to know, I'm happy to have extra check ups and just birth on a ward. I just want a healthy baby, I know that losing weight would be best, and I've been on that for a month lost nearly stone, I'm due to test in 12 days so well see, I don't think I am, it's weird I hope I am but at the same time I'm like it would be good to get another month to lose another stone. But if I'm actily losing weight now and if I caught surely that would keep thinks safe. I see really big woman have babies all the time. I don't know well see it's all a waiting game!

Sounds like the right approach. Don't put your life on hold, but keep plugging away in the meantime. Hope it goes well for you Flowers
