But does anyone know where it originates from?

OK, tbis is clearly a scam...

No, but you should forward it to the fraud team at your bank or building society. There is also an organisation to forward such scam texts and emails to - and hopefully someone will come along and remind me who that is...

Or is this a stealth boast to let us all know you've got a big balance?!

BuffaloCauliflower · 24/01/2019 16:40

@BBInGinDrinking how would it be a stealth boast, these scams just make up a number they don’t know how much is in your account - that’s not how much OP has in the bank

notacooldad · 24/01/2019 16:42

Ha ! No that isn't my balance!! That's how I know its a scam!!!Grin
I'm in town now on my way to the bank about something else so I will mention it.
It appeared in messages!

Either someone's had a sense of humour bypass, or my joke wasn't very funny. Wink

BuffaloCauliflower · 24/01/2019 16:44

Mobile numbers are pretty easy to come by, there’s so many scammers it would be impossible to trace

BuffaloCauliflower · 24/01/2019 16:44

Ah ha - didn’t translate without voice tone

BBInGinDrinking · 24/01/2019 16:57

I was just about to pen a hard luck story and, with puppy eyes, ask OP to 'bung us a few quid' too. The gin bottle is getting low, and the triplets need new shoes. Oh well.

That would have surprised you, Buff, if my voice had spoken that out loud to you, now wouldn't it?! Coming soon to MN - AIBU posts would sound a bit like when Howler letters are received at Hogwarts.

I digress OP, sorry.

They are dreadfully common these scams.

notacooldad · 25/01/2019 11:26

Normally I get the scams by email but this one was by text.
Last sumner I got a couple of texts saying that There was suspicious activity on my bank. I did ring up my bank ( not the number they gave me) I got transferred and they started asking loads if questions. I refused to answer and went to my bank.
Turns out it was legit!! The bank had intercepted sime one trying to scam me out if a few quid as a test run to see how much they could get away with.
Well down to the fraud team for spotting that!

What did the bank say about this one, OP? I've managed to avoid being taken in by all the bank, building society and PayPal scams sent by email, text and phone so far, so I thought I was quite savvy. That was until today, which is pretty ironic after replying to your thread! This was an email seemingly sent by a friend, so I clicked on the links - it was only afterwards that I realised the links wouldn't be the sort sent by them and the end of my friend's email address wasn't quite right. When I contacted them direct they confirmed they hadn't sent it. One link seemed to be to the Google search page, the other to an article in the Mirror online about bitcoins. Now feeling slightly worried and rather foolish! I'll be more careful in future.

notacooldad · 25/01/2019 23:35

I just mentioned it to the teller at the end of a few long transaction . They said They would never send anything out that way and not to open the link.( I hadn't and wouldn't any way )
