Has anyone else given up trying to sell their house? Friggin Brexit

Hi,

Our house has been on the market since the beginning of last summer. Had around 25 viewings, so not a great deal in that time.

It's been reduced and we're really at our absolute bottom figure now. We've had three offers. One fell through, the others we couldn't accept.

Feedback generally has been very positive and we've had a lot of almost offers, but a few recently have said they're too nervous about buying in the current climate and current instability of our government.

Our agent has said there's nothing wrong with our house. Good price, good area etc, but everyone is struggling right now with brexit. They must still be selling houses though!

We do really want to move and don't want to take it off the market, but I would imagine that the amount of time it's been on is actually quite off putting too.

Thoughts please. It's really getting us down.

Thanks

It will sell at the right price for buyers.

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 24/01/2019 14:52

No but I have a friend who is an estate agent. She says it’s stagnant right now.

No advice just sympathy Flowers

Bastardanxiety · 24/01/2019 14:56

Alien, I know what you're saying- a house is only worth what someone will pay for it. It's just we really can't go below a certain figure or it's not worth us moving. Not their problem though, obviously

TheirWill, Sad thanks.

Never put ours on the market as No one is really buying atm round here but need to move so bad as so squashed in our current place :(

lubeybooby · 24/01/2019 15:07

If you really need to move you'll have to reduce again - you should have an offer for every 7 to 10 viewings and if not you're priced too high

If you don't desperately need to move then I'd hunker down for another year at least

sue51 · 24/01/2019 15:08

Above a certain figure there's no movement around my way (Kent).

Puggles123 · 24/01/2019 15:10

We are buying, but had an offer accepted for asking price, 10% deposit ready to go, mortgage approved, all checks etc done and it’s stuck with the sellers solicitors who have been none responsive to request for further information for the contracts. I do wonder why if everything is so bad for sellers at the moment why it’s savage for buyers too; we are close to being at the point we need to withdraw the offer.

UtterlyDesperate · 24/01/2019 15:12

Stamp duty has fucked it up for a few years already in £1 million + bracket (though presumably not for mega-million properties)

BobLemon · 24/01/2019 15:12

Oh that sucks OP. Just to reassure... if it helps... we’re in the market, trying to buy a place, and Brexit has zero to do with our house hunting. Life does go on! Us buyers are out there!

SalrycLuxx · 24/01/2019 15:19

No one is moving. It’s really slow.

cowfacemonkey · 24/01/2019 15:25

Things are really slow around here and prices have dropped considerably (good area, outstanding schools). If you're not desperate I would take it off until the summer when everyone has a better idea of what's happening with Brexit.

CrabbityRabbit · 24/01/2019 15:43

I took £3k under asking and am buying for £30k under asking. Moving from North to South. House I'm buying was on market for about 5 months. Mine was on for 3 weeks. Now just the solicitors dragging feet.

KeptTheBeachesShipwreckFree · 24/01/2019 16:02

The house next door to us sold within 3 months of going on the market. New neighbours moved in on Boxing Day. We're in the north though and it went for under £100K

Bastardanxiety · 24/01/2019 16:06

Thanks for the replies.

Bah! It's all just so frustrating. We keep agreeing to take it off, then we get another couple of viewers, so hold off. Our EA is obviously nervous about us coming off, in case we don't re market with them. I mean, it's possible, as they have definitely not been perfect.

chillpizza · 24/01/2019 16:17

If it’s in the right area at the right price I’d say it’s an agent issue. After being on the market so long you should of had more viewing by now unless something is very wrong or it’s juat poorly advertised.

Bastardanxiety · 24/01/2019 16:58

pizza, a lot of their agents have been leaving recently actually, so I think they're pretty stretched, which could definitely be affecting things. That said, they are (or maybe, were) a popular agent in this area.

In the same boat ourselves. House has been on market for over 3 months and have only had a handful of viewers. It doesn't sound long but our EA says houses in our area usually get snapped up quickly.

We are in a small two bed house and our second baby is due in May. I was hoping to move before the baby comes but I don't think that's realistic now.

It's quite frustrating. I definitely blame Brexit. We have been looking at houses for a year and the market where we are (Greater London) has definitely slowed down with perfectly saleable houses having to drop their prices significantly to sell or just come off the market. So there must be a few frustrated home owners out there!

So we either wait it out or drop our price even more. But that would mean we wouldn't be able to afford a house we really want.

Hope you have better luck soon OP.

PootlesBobbleHat · 24/01/2019 17:17

We live in a booming area with price rises year on year but the past 6 months nothing is selling, and when we renewed our mortgage our house dropped £20k in value in 3 months. It's the lowest value it's been for years.

We have large multinationals on our doorstep who use the UK as the gateway to Europe. If they leave the market collapses.

Now is a terrible time to sell. Stay put and see what happens.

eurochick · 24/01/2019 17:18

Sort off. We put ours on the market last summer, keenly priced. Had several offers within a fortnight. Accepted one. Then.... couldn't find anything to buy. There's nothing coming on the market. What there is is all defective in some way - vastly overpriced, next door to a motorway, etc. We've given up. Well try again when the market picks up.

juneau · 24/01/2019 17:18

This is a dead time of year for house sales. Who wants to go round looking at houses in the cold and the snow? I'd take if off for now and put it back on in the spring and hopefully, by then we'll know what's happening with fucking Brexit. No one is going to bite right now and I don't blame them. Give yourselves a few months' break.

cocoallure · 24/01/2019 17:21

Put ours on and sold in a week, found one easily enough too, of course people are still buying, people still have to move Brexit or no Brexit, we had to for job promotion. If it's a nice house at the right price it will sell.

NameChanger22 · 24/01/2019 17:25

3 houses in my street have gone up for sale in the last six months. All of them had sold boards up within a month. I live in the Midlands. All of the houses were priced around 120,000. Houses are still selling here, for the right price.

OrlandoTheMarmaladeCat · 24/01/2019 17:29

Take it off the market until after Brexit then put it on with a new agent. There are purchases going through - just doing 3 purchase mortgages this week - but they have all got good reductions on the advertised price.

peeblet · 24/01/2019 17:31

people are still buying in London, I work for a developer and we have taken an average of 15 sales a week in Jan. we have had to drop prices but not massive amounts, probably just to what prices were 2-3 years ago rather than relying on any inflation.

PootlesBobbleHat · 24/01/2019 17:35

Prices in London boroughs like Surrey are dropping fast. Some areas in Devon are booming.

It depends on why people are buying where they are - as I said, we have American businesses on our doorstep poised to leave so despite being greater london we've taken a hit.
