Flat next to train line

I’m considering viewing a flat with a garden. Lovely flat, everything I would look for etc. However the central line runs past the house lengthways (as in from garden to front door) at a distance of about 10m away.
I’ve stood outside it - as expected you can definitely hear the train. Would this completely put you off?

I supposed I’m most concerned that because the tube runs through the night it would keep me up, or it would ruin my enjoyment of the garden. Does it make a difference that it’s the tube and not a freight service?

I lived in a really well converted garage that was under the Northern Line. It didn't worry us a bit. Except - we would wake up if we realised the tube WASN'T running - because we knew fun times were ahead getting to work that day!

Far rather train line than near a pub!!

Used to live 10m from central line in a flat with no double glazing. It was fine. Didn’t stop us enjoying sitting out on our balcony or be any bother at all really. Although there was a barrier of trees/shrubs which I suspect did dull the noise a bit. The noise from Wembley stadium on match days was more noticeable.

Sorry wrong thread!

I used to live about 50 metres from a main line railway. As others have said, I found the rumbling of a train rather comforting.

ForalltheSaints · 23/01/2019 18:52

I wouldn't given that there is now a night tube service.

Just to add to my PP about used to live near a train line, I now live under the landing flight path of a major airport and love hearing the planes too.

Whothere · 23/01/2019 18:57

I used to live about a mile away from a station and it was surprising how much you could hear the trains and their horns especially in the summer with the windows open.

Whothere · 23/01/2019 18:58

It didn’t bother me too much but I wouldn’t want to live much nearer.

Piewacket · 23/01/2019 19:01

I live in a house next to a busy railway line and i don't even hear the trains anymore unless I purposely listen out for them. A year ago a man was reading our electric meter in the basement and jumped in alarm and said "My God! What's that?!" I looked around in bemusement and said "...What? The cat purring?"

It was a train thundering past and I'd filtered it out completely and wasn't even hearing it.

I live about 25 metres from the District line (and about 100 metres from the actual tube station so I can only faintly hear announcements) and it doesn't bother me. Crossrail paid for acoustic triple glazing to be added to my bedroom windows and that made a huge difference. It's something you could consider if you move and the noise does bother you.

The only time that the noise can be annoying is when they're doing work overnight. The clanging/banging can be a pain but more so the actual workers shouting to each other. Grrr.

A friend of mine bought a £1 million house (will be worth closer to £2m now) that has the District line and platform right at the bottom of her garden. And her garden isn't big. I had a shock when staying in the guest suite at the top of the house when I realised that not only were conversations of the people waiting on the platform so loud that they woke me up, but that they could see straight into the bedroom from about 15 metres away as the platform was level with the top floor. Blinds definitely required. For me it was a step too far and I wouldn't have spent £1 million on a house that close to the tube.

I’m surprised at all the positive comments!
There is a lot of evidence of the negative impact of noise pollution, I definitely would not even consider it.

Thankfully(?) I have nowhere near a million to spend on a house, close or far from the tube!

I don't see the trains as noise pollution though Acopy

I've lived under the Heathrow flight path - that was noise pollution. And where I live now people live under a big metal railway bridge which is pretty noisy. But a train trundling past is just a nice sound.
