Anyone eaten pheasant?

We have to pre - order for a family meal. I’ve eaten game before but not pheasant. What’s pheasant breast like? This comes wrapped in pancetta with dauphinois potatoes & redcurrant jus.

Yes, but DM used to aim the car at them, not quite the same thing...

colditz · 23/01/2019 17:06

It's nice. It's a dark, lean meat, a little gamey but not overpowering

ScreamingValenta · 23/01/2019 17:07

I have it often - it's one of my favourite meats. It has a sweetish, gamey taste and if cooked properly, the breast is very tender. The accompaniments you mention sound perfect - I'm envious!

Yes. It was fine. Not particularly memorable. Never cook it myself because they only sell them with feathers on where I live which I really can’t be arsed with.

Peaseblossom22 · 23/01/2019 17:07

We eat pheasant frequently , pretty normal around here in season and cheap. The breasts are small and dry out quickly so need genrke slow cooking

iloveredwine · 23/01/2019 17:09

it's lovely with blackcurrant or redcurrent sauce.

JenniferJareau · 23/01/2019 17:10

I have. It is a milder flavour compared to some game birds I've eaten like grouse. I believe it also depends on the age of the pheasant. Younger is a milder flavour and older is more gamey.

If you've not tried it before I'd order it for the experience.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 23/01/2019 17:14

As long as it’s not full of lead shot and hung until the tail falls off it’s nice.

Gumbo · 23/01/2019 17:14

I live rurally and DH used to help a friend out on a farm nearby and often got 'paid' with pheasants - he regularly came home swinging a brace of them Grin. They're a pain to pluck as the teeny tiny feathers hang about the house for weeks... your way sounds a lot easier! Pheasant is very tasty.

Ffsnosexallowed · 23/01/2019 17:16

My gran cooked it lots when I was little. Lots as in both many times and for far too long. Dried out powdery leather

ShowOfHands · 23/01/2019 17:17

All the time as DC. My Dad would pick them up fresh from the road and my brother and I would pluck them. Money was v tight.

I'm a veggie these days but pheasant is a mildly gamey meat which needs a good sharp accompaniment such as redcurrant to add interest.

PlatypusPie · 23/01/2019 17:19

Love it but can get a bit dry if cooked carelessly. Quite a dense meat - it’s mainly breast, the legs are quite scrawny.

theredjellybean · 23/01/2019 17:20

It's delicious.. And the dish sounds fantastic.
Its a lighter game taste as some others have mentioned.. A gamey older lamb taste might be nearest I can think off.
I am 3 weeks into being a reluctant vegan and drooling thinking about pheasant.
As a child I got paid 20p a brace to pluck them for my father's restaurant

AgathaF · 23/01/2019 17:20

Nice, although it depends on the age of the bird and the length of time it's been hung for.

Gumbo skinning so the feathers come off with the skin is much easier than plucking.

Yum, sound good OP. I serve it with red cabbage and dauphinoise.

Family shoot a lot and I pick up the occasional road kill. I generally casserole them or make them into a curry.

Hen2018 · 23/01/2019 18:23

Pigeon also great in a curry.

Cockadoodledooo · 23/01/2019 18:27

Watch your teeth! Had some in a restaurant many years ago, bit what I thought from the size was a peppercorn but it was rock hard - was a piece of lead shot...

Cockadoodledooo · 23/01/2019 18:28

Still enjoyed it though Grin

Burpsandfustles · 23/01/2019 18:31

Sounds really lovely op, go for it. Jealous!

ForalltheSaints · 23/01/2019 18:58

Not as nice as chicken or partridge, but nice all the same.

marmitedoughnut · 23/01/2019 19:16

It's a white meat and I have often thought a comparable taste to describe it to somebody that has never had it before is it's similar to turkey (imo).
