Can depression come in waves?

I can feel fine and positive/upbeat for a while then have a day or two where I feel exhausted, bleak and can't face anyone. Or these mood shifts can literally happen within one day.
Not sure I want to take meds. Last year these mood shifts all but disappeared through exercise, diet etc. But I've been bereaved recently and they're back.
I'm not sure what's normal and what needs treated? The days, spells I am low it's hard for my DH as I'm very low. But then I can literally be myself the next day and fine!

red I started taking St Johns wort last week, I have missed a couple of days (I can’t actually remember if I’ve taken it today!) but I’m not noticing a difference yet tbh. Not sure how long it takes to have an effect though.

Yes mine comes in waves and no, I don’t have any medication for it. I was also bereaved, struggled, felt better then suffered another bereavement so back to square one!

The way I see it is, it’s perfectly normal to be depressed if something bad has happened. And perfectly normal to have good and bad days.

I find lack of sleep makes bad days worse, exercise makes it better (I lost a stone last year and that’s made a huge difference) as does being busy. YouTube yoga sessions (I follow adriene) is so, so good for my mental health and I definitely recommend it. Also, it’s hard to get motivated to do things when you feel low but I made a conscious effort not to bail on social arrangements that I’d previously agreed to and that too has made the world of difference because once I’m actually out having a meal with friends or at the cinema etc I’m fine.

Hope you are ok Smile

Good thing I’m not taking the pill with my memory! Grin

Think I might try St John W. Probably have to take it for a good few weeks to see if it makes any difference

May I just warn anyone planning on taking St John’s wort that it can stop the contraceptive pill from working, resulting in unplanned pregnancy. It’s a rather weak antidepressant in any case, and your GP can prescribe much more effective drugs.

@Lozz22 TBI’s can cause organic bipolar disorder, are you aware of that?
You should seek referral to a neuropsychiatrist, you can be helped.

Oh. Fuck that then. Cos being pregnant would make me suicidal never mind a bit down 😂
