How much of a house deposit did you put down?

I am just getting to the point where I may, at some point, be able to buy a house. I have been saving for ages, and will see a mortgage broker soon.
But because I'm nosy- what was your deposit, and what was the worth of your house? And roughly, what's your income?
(I am self employed so am a bit worried that it'll be hard for me to get a mortgage...)

I don't know where people get so much deposit money from, unless they still live at home and have great wages.
It's such an unfair system now.

dalmatianmad · 24/01/2019 08:13

Zero and I took our extra on the mortgage to pay for all the fees.

Was 18 years ago Hmm

CatRen · 24/01/2019 08:15

90k and it was 25%, London ftb. Obviously had help from both sides. Still paying parents back 6 years later! And the bank obviously.

£33K which was 15%.
Single FTB in South London.

HironsBirons · 24/01/2019 08:35

0% last year. We bought through the LIFT scheme. Only had to pay solicitors fees.

LutherLover · 24/01/2019 08:42

£8.5k which was over 15%

3in4years · 24/01/2019 09:02

20% of first house.
35% of second house.

Since2016 · 24/01/2019 09:16

10% - 32,500 5 years ago FTB. London. Looking to move this year so will be looking to use equity for approx 25% deposit but unfortunately it’s likely to be x2 what we put down last time!

DarcyDrive · 24/01/2019 09:17

75k which was 33%.

Methyl · 24/01/2019 09:56

200k on a 900k house. FTB. We had some savings; borrowed a bit from my mum; DH's parents generously gave us a hand; and we did very well selling some shares. Household income above 250k (can't remember exactly what it was at the time).

MightyMoose · 24/01/2019 17:09

For our first house we put down 400k on a 950k house in London. By then I wasn't working but DH was making 200k a year.

HelenaJustina · 24/01/2019 17:12

Current house 76% deposit. We’re in the South East and had paid off the mortgage on our previous home.

PinkGin24 · 24/01/2019 17:13

Put down nearly £80k. Income was nearly £4,500 joint.

Hen2018 · 24/01/2019 17:43

£0. It was a long time ago and my house cost £44,000.

Hen2018 · 24/01/2019 17:47

Oh, and my income was £8000 as I was doing an MA p/t! (My income has never been more than £14,000)

eurochick · 24/01/2019 17:51

I put down 5% on my first London flat back in the early 2000s. That was 12,500.

We built up equity and put down bigger deposits later. I think we had around 60% for our current place.

RedCrab · 24/01/2019 18:00

I’m agog at some of these first time buyer deposits. Just how??

We’re still saving and have nearly £20k. We have a combined income of 70k. Three children but no childcare costs. We basically both work part time ish. If we worked more we’d just have childcare costs so...

We’re 38 and first time buyers in London. I’m genuinely agog at some of these.

RedCrab · 24/01/2019 18:02

Should have said by the time we’re ready to buy, we’ll have 25k. But we can’t really wait any longer as house prices have slowed due to brexit and it’s probalbly going to pick up again.

Horsemad · 24/01/2019 18:18

I know a young couple who have saved 100k to put down as a deposit - East Midlands.

MightyMoose · 24/01/2019 18:39

We were both high earners and we got married and bought a house before I got pregnant. We lived on DHs salary and saved 100% of mine.

Most other people I know who had a good deposit were high earners who each had managed to buy their own flat then got together and sold both and combined the deposits.

AnnabelleLecter · 24/01/2019 19:28

First home 5%
Second 60%

Brightpinktulip · 24/01/2019 19:36

10% in 2013 which was 18,000. Took us three years of hard saving.

HairyToity · 24/01/2019 19:59

We put down 100k, and borrowed 70k. We paid the 70k off in 5 years. House purchased in 2003.

My husband had been working 10 years, living with parents rent free and saved loads.

Most people would move to a bigger house, but we're quite happy here.

HairyToity · 24/01/2019 20:03

We had our first child after paying off mortgage. I was 29 and DH 34 when mortgage paid off.

Stompythedinosaur · 24/01/2019 20:45

We put down 25%, but the house wasn't worth very much!
