How much of a house deposit did you put down?

I am just getting to the point where I may, at some point, be able to buy a house. I have been saving for ages, and will see a mortgage broker soon.
But because I'm nosy- what was your deposit, and what was the worth of your house? And roughly, what's your income?
(I am self employed so am a bit worried that it'll be hard for me to get a mortgage...)

we are putting down £26k, 10% of the value. FTBs in the South East

Endofrelationship · 23/01/2019 14:11

House 1 deposit was 10%. We were going to do 15% but the best mortgage deal we could find only required 10% and it can be really useful to have some cash spare.

House 2 - 26% but most of this was equity we'd built up from house 1.

30k and it was 10%. First time buyers.

We did 12% - not actually that much though as in north west. 3 bed.

Geekster1963 · 23/01/2019 14:23

First house we put 10% down, we sold that and were in rented for 5 years (DH in RAF), then we put down 25% on our current one as stretching to that made our repayments £100 a month less than if we put 24% down.

cakesandphotos · 23/01/2019 14:23

£12,500 which was 10%

TheShiteRunner · 23/01/2019 14:26

Thank you! I'm waiting on a divorce but then I think I might have enough to have about 50%, depending on the value of the house obviously. My job may be an issue though- I am single with 2 DC, self employed on about 20k a year (but that can vary massively from year to year.)

£40k which was 10%, we were first time buyers in the SE and quite young and couldn't manage more!

Mississippilessly · 23/01/2019 14:36

100k, house was 500k. Combined income of about 100k. DH was self employed and we found a broker who was great.

MaverickSnoopy · 23/01/2019 15:20

First house - £8k on a 35% share of SO house in south east. Full house value was £225k. Joint income £45k.

Second house - £25k on a house in South east worth £250k. Much of deposit was equity. Joint income £55k. Since buying joint income is £30k but childcare costs are now gone.

caffeinebuzz · 23/01/2019 15:23

We put down 5% of a total £570k house price, through Help to Buy.

Spam88 · 23/01/2019 15:30

Just shy of 30%, but then the builders gave us a bit of money that took us under 70% LTV.

gingajewel · 23/01/2019 15:31

We put 5% which was £4800, I live in the west mids.

MrsPerfect12 · 23/01/2019 18:54

Income 190k house 469k deposit was 15% 70k and paid fees and house mods on top (new build)

TokyoSushi · 23/01/2019 18:57

£45K which is about 15%, it comes from equity in previous house

Paddybear24 · 23/01/2019 18:58

170k deposit first time buyers saved up a lot and then luckily some inheritance which helped

OrcinusOrca · 23/01/2019 19:02

First house 21k, 10%. Joint income was 53k.

Second house, 46k, 15%. Joint income was 65k.

ArtisanPopcorn · 23/01/2019 19:11

25% which was £40k, house £160k. V small house, bought a fair few years ago.

noplease · 23/01/2019 19:11

1st house 10% house value £75k, in north and was a repossession needed work doing etc.
2nd house bought last year had £20k deposit from sale of 1st house and some leftover from sale for redecoration etc. House price £115k.
Both earn salary in region £25k.

Lazypuppy · 23/01/2019 19:17

5%. We put £11k down on a £215k house.

mamalovebird · 23/01/2019 19:28

15% of a £230K house's £34.5K. Combined income of £103K.

Most mortgage applications these days focus on affordability (according to my financial adviser) as they want to know the finance is secure. It might be worth speaking to a financial adviser. I'd suggest you keep some cash back in savings to prove that you have the means to satisfy the mortgage repayment during a low income spell.

EvenLess · 23/01/2019 19:28

Income approx £80k. Looking to buy sometime this year. £63k in savings. Currently debating how much to put into a property and how much to hold on to in case of emergency. Max budget around £350k.

Mrscog · 23/01/2019 19:32

11k which was 10% income was about 35k at the time. Income quickly doubled and we over paid so we bought our next house with a deposit of 85k which was 35%.

Bluesheep8 · 23/01/2019 19:34

We put 40k on a 166k house. It was the equity from the sale of the previous house.

Ribbonsonabox · 23/01/2019 19:38

Deposit was 65 grand. Value of house was 164 thousand. DH earns 40k and I'm a SAHM so earn nothing. This was only last year. We have a 23year mortgage.
