Snow/ice driving advice needed please!

The forecast for between 6 and 7 tomorrow morning is -3 and sleet/snow. I leave at this time, driving from a built up area where roads are likely to be gritted to more rural area where they are not. I have to leave this early to be on time, even more so if I need to drive slowly on ice etc.
The problem is that I've only been driving since early December and I don't know what conditions are too bad to drive in! Should I just get the train instead if I'm not confident to drive?

Yes.

If you can get a train, do that.

You’re a new driver, there will be a lot of people driving like idiots. You have nothing to prove to anyone.

(I have been driving for many years, both sides of the road, passenger mini busses etc in ski resorts. I’ll drive anything, anywhere...before I get accused of being pathetic)

If tbe train is an option, I would take that.
Highest gear possible but low speed. Deflate the tyres a bit.
Have stuff for you in the car in case you need to abandon it.
I'd take the train or defer visit to another less snowy date.

Did you learn in difficult conditions? You particularly need to be aware of black ice, which will affect stopping distances and steering will feel light. Take it slowly and leave gaps so you don't need to stop suddenly. It is best to keep a steady speed rather than stop/start, accelerate/brake and turn gently. If you can use the train it might be better than risking frightening yourself.

I'd love to defer my visit to work!
I'll see how it is and maybe consult my line manager later of the forecast is bad.
I never drove in snowy conditions when I was learning.
I hadn't even thought of the idiots and their lack of regard for sensible drivers! Good point!

remember they have an obligation to your safety if it is unsafe to go then don't.

I've been driving 5 years - I'm not a confident driver at the best of times so I get 2 buses to work in the snow which can take 2 hours or husband takes me if its particularly bad then im going as far as the sofa and ringing in

Thanks everyone. The forecast has improved slightly so hopefully it'll be ok!

Take the train if you can. Otherwise, don't brake or accelerate sharply.
Drive in a higher gear than usual (more traction). Leave extra room. Carry some extra kit in case you get stuck.
