Have any of you done one of these? I am curious but if it is a pile of bobbins, I’ll give it a miss.

I've not done it myself, but there was a thread not too long ago here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/3426710-Has-anyone-done-a-Ancestry-DNA-test

I have toyed with the idea but am worried about my DNA being 'out there' on a database and that has put me off. I have nothing to hide at all but it just makes me uncomfortable for some reason

EvaHarknessRose · 22/01/2019 17:38

Ha they are advertising one to me above your thread.

I believe there are some issues, not least how the companies might earn money from or otherwise share your dna data.

I've had one done; I thought it was fascinating. tbh, I think the stuff about the possibility of your DNA being shared is scaremongering.

Realitea · 22/01/2019 17:45

I was going to ask the same today on here! I think it’s fascinating and I’m sending my ‘sample’ off tomorrow!

Why would you give any old company a sample of your DNA?

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 22/01/2019 17:58

I wanted to do it but after hearing personal tales and watching YouTube videos on the subject , I would not altogether trust any result in all honesty .

Why would you give any old company a sample of your DNA?

In exchange for information, I guess is the obvious answer. As I said, I've not done it myself, because I too worry about the implications of a for-profit organisations having my DNA on file. I can see the attraction, though. Especially if your family tree has some gaping holes in it, and you have questions you'd like answered.

I chose to do AncestryDNA. The ancestry results were interesting. They mainly told me what I already know, but there was some interesting stuff in the mix. I waited until their Black Friday sale to purchase my kit.

If you have concerns, this is a good resource for understanding some of the ways in which the companies can use your data:
www.citigen.org/2017/07/12/what-happens-to-your-genetic-data-when-you-take-a-commercial-dna-ancestry-test/

Initially, I was going to do 23andMe including the health stuff. I decided against going that far, particularly as I'm in the USA and worried that having knowledge of a genetic predisposition for a condition could one day impact my health insurance.
