Ds has rash from a ketchup. What's causing it?

My 2 year old DS just ate some ketchup from a fast food place (not healthy I know but its a rare occurrence) and wherever it touched the skin around his mouth, he know has a red rash. Thing is, he eats Heinz ketchup all the time and loads of tomato based dishes like pasta, stews, chilli etc and has never had a reaction. No other known allergies although his brother used to react to some sun creams.

Any ideas what might be the ingredient causing this so I can avoid in future?

Can you get the ingredients list from the place? Or on their website?

Could be mustard seed, or soya.

Same with my daughter so watching with interest, i suspect it might be the vinegar and tomato together?

She is also sensitive to cheap metal jewellery, and chafes very easily in the cold weather- so I think her skin is quite sensitive to a range of things.

She is nearly nine so not really an age thing.

This happens to my 3.5 year old too, only cheap ketchup that she has when out and about, it doesn’t happen with Heinz.

My son gets a rash every time he eats strawberries. Could be anything!

My daughter has a similar reaction to mayonnaise. She isn't allergic to any of the ingredients on their own but mayo caused red patches wherever it touches.

However, with the ketchup, it's likely to be a cheap catering ketchup that are usually heavier on the vinegar side, so it could just be a little too acidic for his skin causing it to be irritated, especially if he hasn't reacted to the brand you use at home. It's unlikely to be an allergy to a key ingredient of ketchup.

CountessVonBoobs · 22/01/2019 12:57

Tomatoes are quite acidic. That plus the vinegar is probably causing a skin reaction. A contact rash isn't really much to worry about. My DS1 got one around his mouth with tomato based products when a toddler, but he grew out of it and has never been allergic to tomatoes - he simply has sensitive skin.

TwoGinScentedTears · 22/01/2019 12:58

We have the exact same thing. Cheap ketchup causes a soreness around his mouth but Heinz is fine.

He's older now (7) and says the ketchups that make him sore taste 'spicy' to him. Also ketchup is the worst for him and second is generic ketchup in single serving sachets.

SnugglySnerd · 22/01/2019 12:58

DD gets this every time she eats tomatoes. Raw, cooked or processed. It usually goes away after an hour or so. I assumed it was just the acidity as she gets it all round her face!

TwoGinScentedTears · 22/01/2019 12:59

Also = Aldi

MissDollyMix · 22/01/2019 13:00

My DC used to get this with tomatoes and tomato based products. If it's just around the mouth area it's almost certainly just a contact rash caused by the acid in the tomatoes.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 22/01/2019 13:01

My boys used to get this. I always assumed it was irritation from the vinegar in the sauce. It never bothered them and would fade quickly.

They’re 10 now, can’t remmeber when it last happened. When they were toddlers probably.

Sparklingbrook · 22/01/2019 13:05

Oh this brings back memories. The only Ketchup that didn't cause DS a rash was Heinz when he was little.

Weepingwillows12 · 22/01/2019 16:03

Thank you. Its fading already so nothing too major. The acidity of the vinegar makes sense. Will just stick to Heinz!

DS gets it with McDonalds BBQ sauce. I have to wipe it off quickly otherwise he gets a red mark when the sauce was. It doesn't spread and fades later on.

AintNobodyHereButUsReindeer · 22/01/2019 16:09

My neice used to get this with ketchup too. Like most others, the only one that didn't cause it was Heinz!

Jjbay · 22/01/2019 16:12

My dc has this problem with any sauce that has been made by Heinz. Unsure what it is but dc is fine with other brands.

leaveby10 · 22/01/2019 16:13

Some ketchups have fish in them.

Jjbay · 22/01/2019 16:16

Piriton gets rid of it pretty quickly otherwise it takes an hour or two.

binkybea · 22/01/2019 16:17

My son used to get this if I used a 'shop' tomato sauce rather than homemade. I never worked out what it was but assumed it may have been the preservatives? Hmm

babysharkah · 22/01/2019 16:22

Mine used to get this from ketchup I just assumed it was the vinegar plus acidity if tomatoes.

MrsNathanDrake · 22/01/2019 16:32

My DSD has a serious allergy to nightshade veg, which include tomatoes, peppers, potatoes and others....

It wasn't diagnosed until she was well into her teens and she had been fine up until then.

Are there any other foods that trigger this kind of response?

Barreleyefish · 22/01/2019 17:21

DGD gets this from raw tomatoes and used to get it from strawberries. After 6 months with no strawberries she can eat a small portion with no rash on her face and the tomato rash doesn’t happen every time. She gets it from all but one brand of wipes too.
