SQL qualifications

Wasn't sure where to put this, sorry!

Can anyone recommend SQL qualifications/ courses, ideally online? Or have any warnings of courses/ providers to avoid? I'm computer literate and use the basics (MS Word, Excel, Office, Powerpoint, etc) without an issue, but the work I'd like to move into really does require SQL- and I have no idea what is considered worthwhile in terms of qualifications.

I've worked in the database world for 25 years. I don't know a single person who has "qualifications" in SQL. We all just learned as we went along.

I’ve taught courses in SQL and as an online resource I’d recommend W3 schools as others have

If you’ve got a laptop (and you want to go that far) you could download a copy of Microsoft SQL Server Express and have a play with the Management Studio. There are free databases out there that can be loaded in.

Off the back of this I have done an hour on a free Codecademy SQL course. Gives me a taster of what to expect in an accredited course at least. And I'm going to download MySQL onto my laptop and have a play with some public datasets to see what I can figure out.

It’s great fun. I work with all kinds of databases and the best thing is puzzling out a way to return the data you want.

I heard someone describe SQL as the secret language of power over data and it's true, it really is. So very satisfying to get information out of a massive impenetrable heap of data.

BestIsWest · 26/01/2019 17:34

I like that cucumbergin. It is very satisfying.

ahola · 24/02/2019 10:18

This is probably a v stupid question, but is it possible to use SQL on a Mac?

Romanov · 24/02/2019 10:21

I would avoid ms access, most companies I have worked for hate it with a passion

Mainly because 1 person will develop it, and if it goes wrong the normal helpdesk will have no idea how to fix it
