Is this a migraine? Lost feeling in my left arm

CallingFromLondon · 21/01/2019 19:22

I've had a headache since travelling home over an hour ago. Then, I got in about 45 minutes ago and just sat down to eat.

I can feel nothing but heaviness in my left arm, from my elbow to my fingertips. I feel sick and still have a mild headache.

I suffer badly when I do have a migraine, I can 'see stars' (my vision goes patchy and there's lots of blind spots). And the headache is excruciating.

I guess the dead arm is migraine, and maybe I'm just lucky tonight and the headache isn't severe?

Anyone experience similar? Thanks

If this is a new symptom I would be getting to A&E.

gassylady · 21/01/2019 19:25

It could be but it could be lots of other (potentially more serious things) I’d dial 999 or go to A&E

SunshineP · 21/01/2019 19:25

I’ve had that as a symptom of migraine and my face goes numb on one side. I hope you’ve gone to bed and are feeling better.

It might be a migraine but not a symptom I'd want to just ride out if it's not usual for your migraines.

Babdoc · 21/01/2019 19:28

Please go to A and E. It could be a cerebral haemorrhage or a thrombotic stroke. If you’ve never had this clinical presentation before with your migraine then it’s very unwise to just assume that’s what it is.

Eeyoreismyspiritguide · 21/01/2019 19:28

Loss of feeling on one side could be sign of stroke. I strongly urge you to go to A & E ASAP as treatment is time sensitive.

Calling 111

I forgot to add in my OP! 48 hours ago or so (can't remember specifically) my migraine was so severe my speech was completely funny and I couldn't form a sentence properly with a horrendous headache and nausea. The speech thing is EXTREMELY frustrating. It happened once before when I was pregnant with DS. DH thought I was having a stroke Blush My face even sent funny apparently

Which side of your head was the severe headache?
If it was on the right hand side and your left arm is numb. Please go to A&E at once,
Forget that just go to A& E

Stardustinmyeyes · 21/01/2019 19:36

If you have aspirin take some, not paracetamol
just aspirin

ILoveMyCaravan · 21/01/2019 19:39

My son has these symptoms but has been diagnosed with hemiplegic migraines. They are very similar to a stroke so if you've not been diagnosed you need to go to a&e to make sure.

ihavecoldfeet · 21/01/2019 19:49

Glad you are calling 111, sounds like it could be signs of a TIA so best to get checked out

Nunyabusiness · 21/01/2019 20:24

I agree that it sounds very much like a hemiplegic migraine, which my husband suffers with and present similar to a stroke - but please get yourself checked over in case it's something else!!

ItsMEhooray · 21/01/2019 20:25

Hope you're ok Thanks

Fishywishyhead · 21/01/2019 20:26

It could be a tia stroke, please get to hospital! My mother is in a terrible state now from ignoring symptoms exactly like yours.

Popsicales · 21/01/2019 20:28

I had this when I was about 21. I lost the feeling down one side and I was slurring my words and couldn’t get them out. It was absolutely terrifying. By the time my DM got to my house to take DS, it all resolved and I was just left with a terrible headache. But definitely get checked out!!

Tiredmum100 · 21/01/2019 20:32

I had the exact same symptoms. Pins and needles down my right side, slurred speech, unalbe to remember my date of birth, post code etc. I was 12 weeks pregnant at the time.
My husband rang an ambulance. I was treated for a TIA (mini stroke). However I am still convinced it was a migraine caused by a surge in hormones due to being pregnant. I sometimes just numbness if my face when I'm having a bad migraine. I would seek medical advice to be sure. You shouldn't ignore such symptoms.

beanaseireann · 22/01/2019 20:00

I hope you are ok OP.

CallingFromLondon · 23/01/2019 11:46

Thanks all, GP thinks possible TIA. But doubts it given my age and the fact the headache is constant after the attack, and I'm having confusion that doesn't seem to go away

Hi Op
I'm so pleased you've been able to see your GP. I hope whatever it is you make a full recovery.

Namenic · 23/01/2019 14:24

The confusion is odd. Did you mention this to gp? If things deteriorate, don’t hesitate to go to hospital.

Fishywishyhead · 24/01/2019 09:05

If it’s a possible tia you really should be seen by the stroke clinic. How was your blood pressure?

SunshineP · 26/01/2019 15:42

This sounds horrendous and I hope they sort it out for you.

Mummyoftwo91 · 26/01/2019 15:48

Yes I get this it's called a hemiplegic migraine

Newdadofgirl · 26/01/2019 15:51

I had similar experience.
Go to A&E.
The confusion and numbness is a concern.
Mine were TIAs.
Go to A&E.

FixTheBone · 26/01/2019 15:57

Rapid access TIA clinic. Pronto.

Speech and unilateral sensorimotor disturbances is a stroke / TIA / brain pathology until youve absolutely proved it isn't

I'd be asking for CT, and if that was normal asking when mr MRI and carotid ultrasounds are going to be, and I wouldnt take no for an answer.
