Bottle fed newborn - trouble getting wind up

Hi

My 12 day old baby is bottle fed cow and gate with the mam anti colic bottles. I really struggle to get her wind up which results in her being sick now and again and now she seems to be having problems with her tummy.

Since her last feed she has slept on and off but been very restless with her legs flailing often. Then pumps a lot.

She isn't constipated. Has had a poo today but i'm wondering if there is anything i can do to get her wind up better and ease any discomfort?

I will give that a go or qe have some of the ready made bottles might go with them for tonight.

She keeps randomly squealing. She us feeding ok and filling / wetting nappies but rang the advice line anyway who humoured me bless them. Apparently they can just have days like this sometimes.

My dd really struggled with the mam bottles. Had TT ones to start and they were horrendous but switched to Dr Brown and they were brilliant, solved all her wind issues.

Never heard of PP causing any problems tbh, I never experienced too much froth anyway, although you can see the difference in the dr browns ones cause all the froth goes to the bottom.

Hope it improves, winding was my least favourite part of the newborn stage!

Aw, it's rubbish when they're unsettled. I've got one you can try ...

Sit the baby on your knee, one hand supporting their back and the other under their chin. Rock back and forth 3 times, side to side 3 times, then anti clockwise 3 times, and then clockwise, again, 3 times. This should get a big bit of wind up.

It was a tip given to my sister by a midwife when her twins were in NICU. It's worked for mine and fortunately, many others I've told. I hope it works for you. She said getting wind up was all about movement really...

Pop them sitting on your knee, sideways (so their face is side-on), support their chest and back with either hand, then move them in a circle like they're doing the hula hoop.

I use a PP machine but stir the powder in rather than shake - it makes such a difference.

I'd also recommend the tommee tippee advanced anti colic bottles (the ones with the tubes in).

My DD had bad colic. A combination of the bottles, stirring the powder and infacol helped no end. She's 5 months old now - we weaned her off infacol at 3.5 months and switched her bottles back at 4 months. The only thing I still do is stirring the powder.

I can't comment on bottles etc as all three of mine are / were breastfed but very windy!
Try googling tiger in a tree hold. It worked like a charm for them

Congratulations by the way

No he just did some massage and said her left side was tight which was trapping the wind. 2 sessions in 5 days and it tially transformed her. She was 5 weeks when we saw him and after the last session I have barely had to wind her. Occasionally I can tell she has a trapped burp but 4 or 5 rubs on her back and out it comes. Can you say roughly where you live. You might be near me

Rarfy · 22/01/2019 12:15

I'm North East, Teesside Way. I have been doing the tiger tree hold since last night. I dont know if its helping.

This is a really stupid question but if she pumps is that the same as getting wind up?

Rarfy you are not near me. But look on the General Osteopathic Council website and see recommended practitioners near you. Good luck

TickVG · 22/01/2019 13:02

HV last week showed me a winding position that is working well. Put baby between your knees upright and try to get her as straight as possible. Move her around in a figure of 8 motion. Then lie on her back and rub tummy. Then put over shoulder and rub back. Then keep repeating. Oh yes and infacol is also good. Good luck!

mommybear1 · 22/01/2019 17:30

I'd look at your bottles OP the suggestions on here are great but if you are still having difficulty I'd try the Dr Browns bottles they were fab for us even with perfect prep. Good luck.

Rarfy · 22/01/2019 18:50

I might give dr browns bottle a try. Bit of a shame as just replaced the tommy tippees with the mams. Would be two full sets of bottles to waste.

Coincidentally we bought a moses basket 2 days ago. I had intended on using the pram for daytime sleeps but we live on a building site and its not really practical. This aft and yesterday she would not go off to sleep which is not like her at all. Im starting to think the basket is the problemm

We didn’t have too much trouble with burping, she mostly farted & that seemed to work for her, but a couple of things, if she’s not too hungry, try winding her gently before & then half way thru the feed.
Obviously this only works when they’re not totally screaming and hangry.

Rarfy · 22/01/2019 19:01

I wind her a few times through a feed and have started with a little winding but she still doesn't seem to get any up. Maybe i am expecting too much. She definitely pumps a fair amount.

Is she lay very flat in her basket?

If so put a small folded blanket under the mattress at the head end to lift it slightly. Make sure it's under the mattress though rather than on top, and not to lifted or she'll slide down!

All 3 of mine slept better that way x

Rarfy · 22/01/2019 22:05

I will try the raised head tomorrow. After her last feed she has been flat out on the moses basket for 2 hours so i maybe i am wrong about the basket.

Do you have a baby Massage class locally? Some of the massages are very helpful for wind.

Rarfy · 23/01/2019 11:35

I do but unfortunately because of the csection and now infection i am unable to go because i keep being told i can't walk far and i can't drive.

A little update from us tho - the figure of 8 thing seems to be working Grin

Oh great! Hope it continues! The revelation for me has been holding my ds straight. It didn't occur to me to do that even though he seemed to want to. Mine is 7.5 wks and I'm hoping we emerge from this windy bit soon. With my DD I had none of this hassle but naturally thought that was down to my amazing parenting. Turns out it was just luck! Grin good luck with your recovery and hope you manage to get out and about soon!

Rarfy · 24/01/2019 11:50

Had a bad night last night but think its because she drank too quick and took ages to settle Confused today seems to be back to normal.

Just had midwife to check stitches and been sent to hospital which has spoilt my afternoon of shopping lol!! Hopefully be in and out quick.
