Was anyone else taught as a child that handwriting with a backwards slant suggests a 'lack of education'?

As a child (in the 80s), I was taught this.

And to this day, I still don't really understand it.

I mean, obviously you can't seriously think there's any cause/effect link between handwriting style and education attainment.

But did the thought that backwards-slanted handwriting correlate with poor education stem from the fact that educators of old uniformly encourage foward-slanted writing (because it's more elegant perhaps)?

It's not something I was taught.
All I can think is it may be linked to the fact the left handed people often tend to have backward-sloping writing, and left handedness was very much considered a 'bad thing' and actively discouraged (but I am sure this had stopped by the 80's). I don't knw why left handedness was considered to be so bad though.

Not heard this. I had a quick google and it was saying left slanted writing is linked to people suppressing their feelings as they had strict parents. I'd take that with a pinch of salt though!

Yes, I agree - it is a dig at left handed people. Discouraging left handedness was still a thing when I was at school in the 80's.

Do you mean slanting to the left, while written with the right hand? I was taught that it meant I was a really horrible person.

Graphology is junk science.

Yes, it's anti left handed.

My granny was beaten for using her left hand, she made it clear that this would not happen to my left handed father. She was then told his hand writing was slanted the wrong way and this would preclude him from having any success (it didn't)

We were taught that it denoted a lazy sort of person - slanting forwards denoting forward drive, slanting backwards meaning that you were a bit too laid back Hmm.

Anyway I took it on board and duly learned to slant forwards!
