I have an 8 month old baby, breastfeeding going really well and baby is thriving. Found out he has a cows milk allergy and the NHS want me to introduce formula!!?? They think I shouldn't be breastfeeding at night/should have him on a bottle of formula (for cows milk allergy) a day. I think I can just keep breastfeeding him and introduce non dairy food into his diet but this seems to worry the dietician... Please any help with breeding a baby with cows milk allergy and NHS experience would be really appreciated.

"the dietician actually compared breastmilk to giving the child macdonalds."

Angry

Please please please complain about that.

Oh and FWIW when I eat dairy the symptoms aren't obvious but DS definitely sleeps better when I'm dairy-free. I do miss dairy but decided that I prefer sleep Wink

Is your baby lactose intolerant? Or allergic to milk altogether?
There are lacto free options.

Surely the formula is just a back up for when you can't breastfeed, like if you want to go out or return to work etc? Crazy to complain that the breastfeeding is filling him up too much for formula. WTF. McDonald's Milkshake indeed.

Lactose intolerance is not the same as CMPA. Babies tend to have CMPA and not lactose intolerance, which is very very rare in babies.
Lacto free milk is not suitable because it still contains cow's milk proteins which is what the baby is allergic to.

You don't need to introduce formula or stop breastfeeding at night. It sounds like the dietician is ignorant about breastfeeding! (I think a lot of the reason they are so anxious to give formula though is because cmpa babies are supposed to have breastmilk or formula until 2, some people aren't happy to feed for that long and it can be difficult to introduce the alternative formulas).

There is a great breastfeeding cmpa support group on Facebook. Loads of recipes and good advice. Good luck xxx

P. S. Co-op jam and custard donughts are dairy egg and soy free Wink
