I've got tonsillitis and have spare antibiotics in the house. Should I take them?

That's it really. I've suffer quite regularly but have found a stash in my drawer. I know they're what the gp would give me so should I just take them?

@Skimmedmilk1 each time I’ve had white spots I’ve been very very poorly. There’s no way I could have waited just to see what happens. Within 24 hours your throat swells and you have full flu like symptoms and can barely get out of bed. I understand there are two types of tonsillitis but I defo needed the antibs (and got better starting 12 hours after antibs commenced)

Some of the ignorance on this thread is shocking.

@Looneytune253 you know for sure you need antibiotics? You have a medical degree and did swabs to check what you have exactly and prescribed accordingly? Or you just took a wild guess and took whatever pills you had lying around? I can tell you it is very uncomfortable to have a sore throat but not nearly as bad as having the risk of sudden organ failure and death because ignorant people took a random selection of pills for some clinically unidentified white spots that probably didn't need antibiotics.

Looneytune253 · 21/01/2019 14:18

@backinthebox no I’ve not said that I’ve done that at all but I do know the difference between ‘proper’ tonsillitis and not tonsillitis in myself so if I was that poorly and had access to antibs then I’d defo take them. Obv a sensible first step would be to see a doc first but our gp refuses to see people with tonsillitis

The thing that upsets me the most is that I have suffered my whole life with ear and throat problems. I normally self manage.
If I show up at the doctors I am desperate.
Over a month and 4 appointments including a phone appointment where I just cried is unacceptable for a grown woman that knows herself and knows her body.
I'm done with trying to be a responsible NHS user. I won't misuse antibiotics because I'm not an asshole. I will however be badgering my practice every week until I get what I want. (Which is just to be taken seriously and have my long term health issues looked into.)

starray · 21/01/2019 14:25

Please DON'T take them. Go to the GP.
I'd be dead without antibiotics and I imagine many others will say that they would not be alive today without antibiotics.
No one should be using them unnecessarily, and everyone should complete their full courses. Or it's back to the dark ages for all of us.

millimat · 21/01/2019 22:31

Well I'm glad there are others who would consider doing what I was thinking.
I've listened to your advice, especially from the gps out there and not taken them. Going to the doctors tomorrow.

Yes, take them! If they were prescribed for you, for the same symptoms and they’re not out of date, then do it.

abbeydo · 22/01/2019 09:15

No. Don't be so selfish
