Can anyone recommend a tablet for a 9 year old?

DS turns 9 in a couple of weeks, and I think I'd like to get him a cheap tablet. I think my budget is about £70- 90, and he would mostly use it to download and play games, and to watch YouTube on. He'd also like a camera, and I've been told that sufficient memory is important? Help, I'm completely clueless!

Kindle Fire HD

Kindle fires are apparently quite good. Or Maybe a 2nd hand iPad.

Yeah I second a Kindle Fire, you can order kids ones that come with a year of amazon kids free but not sure if he's a bit old for that. They will also replace it due to accidents and it comes with a handy cover the reduces damage

Thank you folks. A quick Google shows me that actually there's not that much choice for tablets aimed at kids- which actually does make things easier, as long as you're not worried about Amazon dominating your life Hmm.

I did notice that you can get cheaper Fires aimed at adults, but given that I am, as previously mentioned, utterly clueless, perhaps paying the extra to have a kids' one all set up - with that amazing guarantee!- is going to be more than worthwhile.

We've got a Kindle fire but the kids stuff is a bit young for a 9 year old. It's also frustrating as they can't Google anything or watch you tube in the kids mode (unless I'm doing something wrong). I often just log in as myself so it can actually be used fully.

I like how you can set time limits on it though. Also good for reading books.

Kindle fire, without a doubt. My kids have had them for years 😊

OK, so would it be worthwhile to buy an adult Kindle Fire instead? Reading up about it, it seems that, after a year, you have to pay £3.99/ month to access all this stuff anyway, and I kind of like him to read his books as books, IYSWIM.

Also, he really likes watching YouTube (mostly reasonably wholesome stuff, like bushcraft videos and Top Gear Hmm, although also a fair bit of Minecraft stuff), and he often Googles stuff, although it would be good to set some kind of controls on that.

You'd think you'd be able to find out all about what a Fire can or can't do by looking at the Amazon website, but I'm finding it a bit opaque and sketchy on the details, to be honest.

(I mean, so far he's been using my old laptop, with the space bar missing and part of the screen knackered because DS2 did something unspeakable to it, and the power cable that you have to hold in at a certain angle to make it charge, and the only parental control I've ever set is gliding up behind him at random intervals and barking "What are you watching now?" Grin)

We just got a fire tablet for ds(8) for Christmas. Got the adults one and have set up a kids profile on it. He has plenty of games eg roblox/Minecraft etc, can access books/audiobooks incl any I add from the prime lending library and we have put the Vtube app on for him to watch the YouTube videos he likes.

He absolutely loves it & we really like the parental controls on it & the fact you can restrict time on say apps but leave unlimited time for say books. We have also (at the moment) restricted his online gaming capabilities so he can only play with friends that we approve & we have disabled online chat etc so he can’t chat with strangers.

That's really useful squealing piglets, thanks xx

Can he use Google on that? Or is it quite easy to switch over to an adult profile and back, when he needs to use it?

We bought a kindle fire for our ds10 for Christmas. Disappointing. It kept switching itself off. After rebooting it and putting it back to factory settings we sent it back. Amazon sent a new one but same problem , keeps switching itself off. Maybe we were just unlucky . We're about to send second one back to get full refund. Quite a lot of the reviews I have read say this is a common problem.

My kids just got the 7 inch fire, they're quite robust if you get a good case for them. My kids mainly use theirs for you tube.
