Shortest marriage ever?

Just found out my friends marriage ended after 2 months.

They were together 7 years.

It wouldn’t even say it’s thats uncommon. I’ve known a few couples together years and end their marriage in a matter of months.

Quite often people who’ve been together for ages and not for married will then get married when things start getting rough because they think it’ll mend their relationship, it rarely does!

PippilottaLongstocking · 20/01/2019 18:59

Not GOT married

Lurleene · 20/01/2019 19:03

I went to a wedding once and the couple came home separately from their honeymoon and never got back together. They had been a couple for about 10 years and owned a house, it was very sad.
I guess that some people choose to get married to fix problems in their relationship, but sadly it doesn't work.

Parthenope · 20/01/2019 19:05

I distantly know one couple who came home separately and early from the honeymoon, never lived together after that, and the wife initiated annulment proceedings Immediately. It takes ages, but I think she was successful. So — under a fortnight?

BasinHaircut · 20/01/2019 19:05

I know someone who married last summer and separated in December. They have a toddler and another on the way, been together since teens I think.

Shocking but seems quite common!

Parthenope · 20/01/2019 19:06

Gosh, Lurleene, either it’s the same couple or it’s more common than I thought. But the couple I knew hadn’t been together anywhere near that long, from what I remember.

Mulberry72 · 20/01/2019 19:08

One of my siblings was married just over twelve months, they’d been together since they were 15, got married at 22, moved in together and found out they were completely incompatible.

Another sibling was married nine months after being caught out having an affair.

RandomMess · 20/01/2019 19:10

I knew a couple that argued on their wedding day and successfully got it annulled!

BikeRunSki · 20/01/2019 19:11

Friend of mine did:
Single- met new man got married - 15 months - divorce proceedings started 9 months later. 24 months from meeting to sending him packing.

Foonababoonalagoona · 20/01/2019 19:11

Isn't it really odd? I know 3 couples who had been together for 10 plus years and separated the same year they married! I have been with my DP for 25 years and we are supposed to get married this year ...... Watch this space Grin

Jiggins · 20/01/2019 19:12

I think it's true that some people get married in a last ditch attempt to save a relationship. Totally illogical but matters of the heart generally are.

I also know a couple who split up on honeymoon.

JHBurkett · 20/01/2019 19:13

I think potentially marriage is just the logical next step.

Then maybe it hits them afterwards that it isn’t what they wanted.

I am ashamed to say our marriage only lasted 18 months, money problems was a huge factor but also we clearly had different ideas where our life was going. We had only been together for about a year, only 23 (I just left Uni) in hindsight it was an utterly stupid mistake (exh agrees with me) but at least we are still friends now.

It was pretty embarrassing to say your marriage had failed after less than two years...

adaline · 20/01/2019 19:22

My cousins marriage only lasted a matter of weeks. It should never have taken place in the first place though.

JHBurkett · 20/01/2019 19:41

I understand why you feel that way. But you shouldn’t have, I admire you - it takes guts to realise you made a mistake and put things right.

Worked with someone who daughter married, went on honeymoon but came back early alone.
She then moved in with a man she'd met on her hen night.
Grim bit was she expected her mum to tell everyone, return presents etc.

Jiggins · 20/01/2019 19:49

I can understand being embarrassed about a short lived marriage in the immediate aftermath, but a few years down the line it would just become a part of your story. Hopefully nothing more than an interesting anecdote.

Knew a couple who were together for around a year. Got married abroad and had a reception 3 weeks later. Well, the reception felt a bit off and we couldn't work out why.

I mentioned to sil (who was bridesmaid) at the bar towards the end of the night that I forgot to bring their card/cash with me so I must apologise and arrange to drop if off - she told me not to bother.

Turned out they had a huge crisis just before the wedding day when they were away. She'd got really close to a work colleague and wanted to call it off but her family had spent so much money she felt couldn't back out.

They'd agreed a few days before the reception to separate so total married life was about 10 days.

She married the work colleague, had 2 kids and they are still together 15 years later.

A girl at my work split up from her husband on honeymoon.
They'd been together years, had 3 DS's, owned their own house.
We were told not to ask her what happened when she eventually came back to work but I know she did tell those she was close to but thankfully they didn't gossip about it so I'm not sure what happened.
She seems happy now
