Hairbrush recommendations for very thick wavy hair

pud1 · 20/01/2019 17:27

My 10yo dd has extremely thick long wavy hair. I have always struggled with brushing it. It gets knotted very easily and we try to keep it tied up but it’s still a nightmare. I need a brush that can handle to knots but without the tears. The only way I can get the knots out is by wet brushing it covered in conditioner. Tangle teaser does not touch it. I have googled brushes for thick wavy hair but would love a recommendation.

I could've written this. DD11 has very similar hair and the Tangle Teaser she got for Christmas is pants!!

CrazyDuchess · 20/01/2019 17:31

What about a denman brush? Solid and well made I wouldn't be without mine, however my daughter's hair is fine, but she has a lot if it and knots very easily

amusedbush · 20/01/2019 17:31

I recently bought a Denman paddle brush from Boots and it’s fab. It’s really wide and makes short work of tangles without pain. It was about a tenner.

Also are you using a really good leave in conditioner? I find the hair tangles less when I do so

pud1 · 20/01/2019 17:32

Thanks. We have a denman and it’s great for my other dd but not enough for my 10yo hair.

If it's really wavy it should probably be curly and doesn't need brushing except combing after washing.

Have you investigated the Curly Girl Method?

pud1 · 20/01/2019 17:43

Hi. I have looked at the curly girl method but it’s not that wavy

Showerbrush/wet brush used wet or dry is far superior to the tangle teaser in my experience. :)

FortyFacedFuckers · 20/01/2019 17:46

I have really thick long hair that get tangled and have spent a fortune on brushes over the years. The best brush I have found is one that is a few pounds in b&m bargains! It’s called a shower brush. So good I have about 10 of them in case they stop seeking them.

FortyFacedFuckers · 20/01/2019 17:48

This one honestly it’s brilliant

I have very thick wavy hair and recently bought the babyliss paddle brush from the new rose gold range and it's fabulous

Troels · 20/01/2019 18:09

Thick and wavy? Don't brush it. Use a wide comb and only when there is conditioner in it. Once it's dry leave it alone or it'll get bigger and bigger.
I do the No-poo thing, not touched by shampoo in twenty odd years. Conditioner wash then a good condition and a bit of leave in stuff, combed and scrunched and left alone. Best condition of my life since doing this.

JuniperBeer · 20/01/2019 18:10

One that looks like a tangle teaser, it’s has wavy bristles but has a handle. Paddle brush. Amazing

Ginnotgym · 20/01/2019 18:17

Mason Pearson all the way..,

Maelstrop · 20/01/2019 21:55

Have you tried soaking hair, wrap towel round for two minutes, add conditioner and brush then leave to dry? Her hair won’t be as unmanageable and you won’t need to brush it again that day. I’d lay off normal shampoo too. Don’t brush when it’s dry, it just wrecks thick hair.

FortyFacedFuckers · 22/01/2019 00:23

Hi OP did you try the b&m brush?

ifeellikeanidiot · 22/01/2019 00:37

Dd has long wavy hair, used to get so knotted. Tangle tweezer just seemed to go over the top of it.

We stopped using shampoo on the bottom three quarters and its worked miracles. We Shampoo scalp and top inch, then co wash the rest. It's just as clean, and almost never knotty. It used to get tangly before you'd even pulled brush through.

We also use wet brush, but it's stopping using shampoo that's made big difference.

minipie · 22/01/2019 00:46

DD’s is Long thick and wavy. I only use conditioner on it (a sulfate free one) in the bath. Then also use lots of spray in conditioner (Aussie) in the morning before brushing. We do use a Tangle teazer and it works ok but wouldn’t without the spray.

It’s sort of like curly girl I guess but less extreme. the key is not to let the hair dry out too much hence no shampoo and using spray. Surprisingly it never looks greasy.

Littlemissmax · 22/01/2019 00:46

Another vote here for the WetBrush, I have waist length hair that has been bleached within a inch of its life and then dyed every colour of the rainbow, it's the only brush that gets through my tangled mess and stops me from cutting it all off. Can buy they on eBay and Amazon for about a fiver, money well spent imo Smile

Sashkin · 22/01/2019 01:47

Wide comb, in the bath/shower only. You cannot brush wavy/curly hair, and the faster straight-haired parents accept that, the better for all these poor curly-haired kids out there!

You know it isn’t working, changing the brush won’t fix the underlying issue (that you can’t fucking brush curly hair).

I have SUPER curly hair - you would never have known it when I was ten and being forced to drag a brush through it twice a day. Lovely waves and ringlets now I know how to look after it properly.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 22/01/2019 01:58

Another vote for Mason Pearson.

I buy the Tresemme paddle brushes from Superdrug. My hair is long thick and straight. I also use a giant wide toothed comb to brush my hair when its wet. DH calls it my garden rake. I need a new one but our local Superdrug dont seem to stock them anymore.

WinkysTeatowel · 22/01/2019 12:59

I'm with @Sashkin if it's so wavy you can't brush it, it's curly. Curly hair is on a scale from small waves to tight ringlets. When I was a child my Mum used to brush my hair so it was wavy and awful, it's taken me years to embrace my curls and you'd be amazed how much curlier it is if you look after it properly. It really is worth a go.

widgetbeana · 22/01/2019 14:12

Try a 'wet brush'. It's what we went to when the tangle teaser stopped working for us. My dd has very thick hair, and it gets through every snag and knot so much better than any other brush. The tangle teaser is put strong enough any more and the den man pulls quite a bit. This works much better. I got it as a recommendation from a friend with really thick hair. So that's two who it worked for!

They come in different sizes and colours too.
