Flying hand luggage only - sachets for liquids/cream?

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 20/01/2019 13:54

Off to Italy later this year and we've committed on our booking to hand luggage only. There's three of us for 4 days so we won't need loads in terms of toiletries etc but I was thinking of taking sachets for shampoo, conditioner and body lotion for myself as they are small and light.

Has anyone any experience of doing this? Will I be ok going through security provided I pop them in the clear plastic bag?

Feel Unique do 5 sample sachets for £4 delivered and you get that credit back towards a different purchase. If you know of anywhere else that does similar I'd love to know!

Thanks you lovely lot Smile

That will be fine. Personally I just take a bar of solid shampoo and solid soap when travelling hand luggage. Saves faffing with mini liquids. then small bag of 'liquids' is anything under 100ml ie mascara, perfume

BruceAndNosh · 20/01/2019 13:56

I used to save the freebie sample sachets that come in glossy magazines for just this purpose

greenelephantscarf · 20/01/2019 13:57

fine as long as they are 100ml or less and all fit in a 1l ziplock bag zipped shut

I take a bar of soap, solid shook a dmitchum solid deodorant. I wouldn’t faff around with sachets to be honest.

I can't see why there would be a problem with security as long as the quantity in mls was clearly printed on the sachet. It's quite an expensive way to take toiletries though, I usually just decant my usual products into refillable bottles - the ones from Ikea never leak and are robust enough to be used time and time again.

Petalbird · 20/01/2019 14:08

Couldn't you just get travel bottles to fill up?

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 20/01/2019 14:12

Brilliant thanks everyone! Yes to solid shampoo and soap .., we have plenty of the freebie hotel ones soap wise. I may try experimenting with solid shampoo now as we're off to Rome and don't want to discover it gives me shit hair (I know that's v vain!) until I'm there!

Nanny good point and I do normally do that for longer breaks. I thought of sachets for this as potentially I've got no empties to pack coming home.

Magazine freebies is a good idea, bonus being when I'm wearing them all I'll smell like human pot pourri!

Thanks again folks.

You can take bottles up to 100ml
every supermarket sells travel sizes of stuff

StarlightLady · 20/01/2019 20:52

If you are staying in an hotel, you will probably have adequate shampoo supplied. Conditioner is difficult to decant into small bottles, but you can buy 100ml bottles easily. For other day to day toiletries, I usually hit Boots when airside (after security); no restrictions then. But remember you won’t be able to bring it back.

Try and have your clear bag packed and ready, then just pop it out if your case while others are faffing round.

And remember, there is no hanging about at the conveyer the other end. That is really lovely.

Enjoy your trip.

Thanks Starlight we're renting an apartment this time (fancied having more space when we get back in the evening rather than all being cooped up in one room. Loft has a gorgeous terrace overlooking a main piazza too, can't wait!) so we won't have bits provided unfortunately.

You're right, I am also really looking forward to not hanging around waiting for luggage at the other end (why is our always last?!) Smile

If you renting an apartment, just buy large bottle of shampoo and conditioner in airport for everyone to use.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 21/01/2019 09:53

Kaz I'm thinking I might do that as I can then be a good egg and leave what's left for next occupants.

Think buying airside may be the way to go for lots of items we share actually. May still use Feel Unique for samples/sachets of perfume and nice body lotion as they credit your account with the cost to use against another purchase so as long as I do this the samples haven't actually cost me anything.

Our airport shop is now a Superdrug (was Boots) does anyone know if airport prices are the same as same shop on a high street? I have in the past emailed them to ask but all they said was prices can vary. Just wondering how much. Especially on things like suncream.

Thanks!

Prices are dearer, but not that much, I always find the sachets have never enough in.and I can never tear them. Plus which you'll have more room for clothes. Talking of which I can highly recommend packing cubes. Cheap ones work just as well, and roll everything you get much more in.

TOADfan · 21/01/2019 11:25

I always bring sachets. Poundland does lloreal sachets 50 for £1. Means I'm only bringing what I know I will use.

StrawberryTraveller · 21/01/2019 14:29

Have you asked apartment owners what is provided? Many include hand soap, shampoo and conditioner.

Please don't leave half used shampoo bottles in the apartment after you leave, I know you think its helpful, but owner/cleaners will just throw away as they won't want to let it to the next people with half used open products. Therefore its just more work as another thing to bin.

Same with any food items, they can't be kept if opened to regulations. So 3 unopened beer bottles from a 6 pack = fine to leave. Half a bag of sugar, opened ketchup, half a packet of rice etc not ok.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 21/01/2019 14:47

Good point Strawberry regards leaving things, I'll just be adding to the plastic problem too. Checked and owners do say nothing included unfortunately.
