Pleas humour me by helping me visualise Eleanor's 'shopper'. What did it look like? She talks about it like it's a bag; but I'm sure there's mention of it having wheels at some stage. Can anyone link to a picture of what it would have looked like?

I imagined it like an old lady trolley on wheels thing. Which I actually thing are VERY practical and we should all be using them.

MacarenaFerreiro · 20/01/2019 09:26

I'm Scottish and live in the same city as the author and Eleanor.

Agree that I would imagine a shopper as a trolley on wheels, old lady style. Similar in 70s style to Eleanor's beloved jerkin.

Loved this novel - such a strong debut book. I know it's been optioned for a movie but dread to think what they'll do with it. They ruined "Girl on a Train". Eleanor lives in Glasgow. Not in New York, Baltimore or Boston.

TulipsInbloom1 · 20/01/2019 09:27

Wasn't it a big bright purple pull along shopping trolley?

MacarenaFerreiro · 20/01/2019 09:30

Like this. Although more old fashioned.

I agree Macarena. I am a huge film fan but I really wouldn’t want to see this as a film unless a really top class British director took it on and an unknown actress in the role. And it has to be set and filmed in Glasgow. Great book!

TulipsInbloom1 · 20/01/2019 09:37

Reece Witherspoon has purchased the film rights. So it will be produced by a woman, and she is known to surround herself with female crew.

I see Chris O Dowd as Raymond. In a sweater vest.

HappydaysArehere · 20/01/2019 09:39

Love that book.

TulipsInbloom1 · 20/01/2019 21:00

How old is Eleanor in the book? Someone like Jessie cave could be good. Bit sort if quirky.

CoperCabana · 20/01/2019 21:08

I have an old lady trolley and it is fantabulous!

UrsulaPandress · 20/01/2019 21:10

Thread on the book recently and lots of people didn’t like it. 👀

halpert · 20/01/2019 21:16

@Tulipsinbloom1 if I remember correctly shes late 20's

halpert · 20/01/2019 21:16

I'm just on chapter 10 & thoroughly enjoying it 😁

Emilydickensonsdogs · 20/01/2019 21:21

Brilliant book. What have you all read since? I’ve read a few books but nothing brilliant. Would love a recommendation please.

CassandraCross · 20/01/2019 21:24

I think it is some thingy that has fold out wheels and a handle as Eleanor says at one point in the book that her shopper was becoming too heavy too carry so she pulled out a handle and wheels. I can sort of imagine it but it sounds rather unattractive even if it is practical.

Mokepon · 20/01/2019 21:26

I imagine it like this but with a Kath Kidson type floral pattern.

Mokepon · 20/01/2019 21:28

Oh ffs.
Sorry, photo didnt load and link messed up.
It's been a long day.

SoaringSwallow · 20/01/2019 21:30

I imagined it was an old lady Shoping trolly too. I've got one too and it's brill.

I don't want to see the movie. Movies are about stories. Books are about prose and stories. The writing was so gorgeous that there's no way an American film can do it justice. In fact, I'd be surprised if an American could understand most of the cultural references, as they were so specific. Which was part of its draw.

The book actually gave me horrible nightmares and flashbacks. I should have stopped reading it but I couldn't stop enjoying the words on the page.

HamiltonCork · 20/01/2019 21:32

Loved that book.

SoaringSwallow · 20/01/2019 21:32

*shopping trolley!
Apologies for any other dodgy typos my phone came up with.

CantstandmLMs · 20/01/2019 21:33

Oh how I adore Eleanor and her shopper and jerkin!

love this book
I cried all the way through
her saviour was so surprising

shewholikeslipstick · 20/01/2019 21:38

I imagined it to be like Roy Cropper's (Coronation Street) shopper. Can't remember it being described as having wheels. Must have missed that bit.

Hubcapdiamondstarhalo · 20/01/2019 21:39

I'm in the middle of reading it now. I was imagining an old fashioned shopping bag till she said she could take a collapsible frame from one of the inside compartments, build it up and turn it into a bag on wheels. I haven't found one like that in online search. It also has a "jaunty pattern".

She tells Raymond that she's recently turned thirty.

I'm really enjoying the book, though it took me a little while to warm to her. I'm 85% through it so might just head off and finish it now.
