5 good reasons to go for a run?

MaureenMLove · 20/01/2019 08:15

Help, because I have at least 5 reasons not too!

  1. I haven't run for over a year because,I have rheumatoid arthritis
  2. It's my birthday - I am old
  3. It's cold
  4. I'm starving hungry
  5. I'm lazy

Number five keeps giving me a little dig!

Happy Birthday 🍰

It will help you feel proud of yourself given your list of reasons you don’t won’t to- that you did!
Running helps build an amazing core, will help you lower your rest heart rate and apparently one hour of excercise gives you two on your life.

DuggeesWoggle · 20/01/2019 08:19
  1. You will feel better for it
  2. You will feel better for it
  3. You will feel better for it
  4. You will feel better for it
  5. You will feel better for it

Have a little something like a half a banana and go for it. 15 minutes will do as a start.

As long as you are ok to exercise with your arthritis - I don't know if it's something that will be adversely affected by the cold damp weather or if you need to be given the ok to run by your doctor. If you feel it flaring up stop and walk.

I always feel better for having gone for a run!

Smarshian · 20/01/2019 08:19
  1. Today is the day you will begin to regain your fitness.
  2. You will feel fabulous about your decision for the rest of the day.
  3. You will therefore feel great all day on your birthday.
  4. You will burn off the calories for your cake.
  5. The air will do you good.

Have a banana and big glass of water before you go.

My best way of getting out is to put my gym clothes on immediately.

The hardest step of a run is the first one out the door.

HumptyNumptyNooNoo · 20/01/2019 08:20

Happy birthday ! Have the day off and start running tomorrow!

aldgadgie · 20/01/2019 08:20

Oh and it means you can eat Birthday 🍰 later. Happy Birthday.

DuggeesWoggle · 20/01/2019 08:20

Happy Birthday - fried egg sandwich totally justified Grin

FauxFox · 20/01/2019 08:21

It’s your birthday so only go if

  1. There will be a beautiful view
  2. It will make your heart happy
  3. You will feel a bit rubbish if you don’t
  4. It means you’ll feel happier to indulge in birthday cake and treats if you’ve been
  5. You want to 😁

Happy birthday 🥳

Auntiepatricia · 20/01/2019 08:21
  1. It’s your birthday and you’re old so it’s important to stay fit
  2. You will feel great after and for the whole day
  3. You good will taste better
  4. You can have time to think and plan things as you run while listening to your favourite songs
  5. You’ll feel plenty warm when you get going
Fourfantasticfrogs · 20/01/2019 08:23

Happy Birthday.
You never regret going for a run, but if you don't you'll kick yourself that you didn't do it.

MyDH repeats that to me every time I don't want to go out in the cold/wet/wind/can't be bothered.

Just 15 mins will be enough.

QOD · 20/01/2019 08:25

ya I’m sitting here procrastinating too

My knees hurt
My legs ache
I’m old
I’m fat
I’m tired
Sigh

MaureenMLove · 20/01/2019 08:30

Thanks all. I think my knees are the only part of my lower half not affected by arthritis! I'm not sure if I'll hurt or not to be honest. I hurt most of the time, so I might as well have a go. I have my kit on. Charged my Fitbit and iPod in post pub drunken state last night, when I was surprisingly determined to go!Grin. DD looked at me like I was mental!

I run round a lake, so it's pretty enough. I think I'm going to do it!

You'll get some me time away from the kid(s)

BusySittingDown · 20/01/2019 08:33

  1. You feel feel better for it.
  2. You will burn extra calories therefore can eat lots of cake.
  3. Lovely fresh air.
  4. The satisfaction you get after it's done.
  5. Keeping heart healthy blah blah blah.

I'm an avid excerciser and run a lot (mostly on treadmills now that it's always dark at the times I can run, I go outdoors in summer as I'm a wimp Grin ). I will never use an excuse not to go. HOWEVER - it's your birthday! On a Sunday! Surely that's an excuse to laze in bed and eat lots of cake and treats, especially as birthday calories don't count so my point of number 2 is irrelevant Wink.

Happy birthday 🥳 Flowers. Have a great day Cake.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 20/01/2019 08:36

I run round a lake to Grin
Do it
Even if it’s a little bit every step is a step towards being a little bit fitter

FlamingJuno · 20/01/2019 08:38

I'm meeting my friend in an hour to run 10k (training for my first half-marathon). I've eaten two rice cakes with peanut butter, and drunk water, and tea. I don't want to go, I have arthritis in my knees (I'm 55) and its cold outside. It may even be raining. I absolutely hate the very thought of it, but at 10:30 I'll feel terrific.
Go, and happy birthday 🥳

MaureenMLove · 20/01/2019 08:39

Now then, I really don't need sympathy, but here's the family set up. DD and boyfriend are 23, I doubt they'll even notice I've been out! DH left before Christmas, I have to spend the day at my mothers, because she's insisted I go there for lunch. She's a shit cook and will probably be drunk when I get there.

I've had 50 birthdays before this one, so being my birthday is not a good enough excuse!

I am going - right now - must stop pressing refresh!

I'll be 1 hour (maybe half an hour!) Grin

Happy Birthday Op, I bet you aren’t as old as I will be in a few weeks!

I ran regularly 5+ yrs ago, even went to a club once or twice a week, let it slip for various reasons and have had various attempts to get back into it.

This latest attempt seems to be succeeding, I go to a local playing field and do ‘intervals’ across it, resting in between. It’s hard even getting out of house some times, but as someone said upthread The hardest step of a run is the first one out the door - if I can do it anyone can, I am less fit and fatter than 5yrs a go.

Do you have anyone to run with, I know that I would benefit from a running partner but not quite ready yet!

megletthesecond · 20/01/2019 08:51

You can listen to music / radio.
Might see a cute dog.
Squirrels.
Rosy cheeks.
Feel much better when you get home.

MaureenMLove · 20/01/2019 09:55

I'm back! 3k in the bag. Not bad after a year away. I'd have run further but it's a bit of a pain listening to music on your phone on your birthday. Umpteen interruptions from birthday texts, Facebook notifications and what app messages. (Little Miss Popular, me!)

Anyway, I'm ready for bacon sarnie and fizz I think! Thank you for the good wishes and encouragement! Grin

mckenzie · 20/01/2019 10:04

Well done you and happy birthday.
Personally I don’t get the listening to music thing. I much prefer to listen to my surroundings but that’s obviously personal choice.
One thing that might help Maureen is to keep a running diary. It’s not for everyone but recording how you feel before your run, the details of your run and how you feel afterwards can be quite rewarding. And you can use it to inspire you if you ever feel like you did this morning.
It’s beautiful this morning where I live; I’ve had a glorious sunny run; flipping cold but sunny. Happy days Smile

ForalltheSaints · 20/01/2019 10:11

One I would add- other exercise options may be expensive or not easily accessible.

QOD · 20/01/2019 17:13

I went too!
I reckon I’ll regret it tomorrow when I go again and it’ll all
Ache more

Happy birthday 🥳

Sorry about your dh. And your mum. Tough times

MaureenMLove · 20/01/2019 17:37

The music keeps me going. I know it's only approximately 5 songs and I've done a lap of the lake!

I also don't want to do any thinking tbh. I want to get lost in the music!

Can't wait to go again now. New trainers with birthday money I think.
