I've got a painful oatcake stuck in my gum.

It happened a few weeks ago and everytime I eat it gets pushed in and quite hurts.

Any way to get it out. Water flossers, tepi and floss isn't helping.

Dentist has a wait, didn't book something as it was several weeks away and hoped it would be out by now :(

Possibly missing the point of this thread but oatcakes are different things in different regions. Can you confirm what foodstuff you've eaten please?

3out · 20/01/2019 08:39

I was thinking that Gin. I’m guessing it’s the type which is like a biscuit for cheese? (And with rough cut oats).
I’ve never tried any of the other oatcakes before, they’re a bit more bread/scone like aren’t they?

M0reGinPlease · 20/01/2019 08:49

Some (from Staffordshire I think) are like pancakes.

It'll be a bit of hard oatmeal that's giving the OP gip. Definitely stick to the Midlands ones. Oozing with melted cheese. Yum.

3out - in Staffordshire and Derbyshire they are flat yeast leavened pancakes with oatmeal in the batter. Absolutely delicious.

Ah! I knew they weren’t always biscuits, but couldn’t remember what they were like. If I’m ever in that neck of the woods then I’ll def try them, thanks! @wowfudge

Is the oat out OP?

wowfudge · 23/01/2019 21:05

Tesco sell them here in Derbyshire 3out. They're much nicer homemade or from a hole in the wall oatcake shop (there aren't many of those left).

3out · 23/01/2019 21:10

I’d try to make them myself, but I doubt I’d do them justice (and I wouldn’t know if they tasted right or not!)
It’s rather annoying because I’ve been to Derbyshire a few times as a child, and I was in Staffordshire three years ago - but no one told me about the local delicacy!
Something to look forward to :)

Finally out now, spent ages trying to get it out and ended up having to spend £40 on an emergency dentist appointment. So annoyed it took him 5 seconds to get it out :(

Ugh that is really annoying. Worth it for the relief I’m sure, but still annoying!

Fusioluxe · 24/01/2019 20:20

Ouch!

Oh well out now. Did he give you any tips if it happens again?

Is the gum a bit loose? I have had amazing results with Gengigel Gel where my gums had receded on one side due to a veneer to cover a gap. It’s soothing if nothing else.

Gaballout · 24/01/2019 20:30

It was kind of only a moment of relief, literally two seconds then put in a temporary filling without asking. Hopefully I get used to it by tomorrow and then feels settled. Least I can eat without it hurting now. Although worried he was so quick on one tooth he's missed more :(

No advice I had to ask and he was saying to use floss or a tepi brush! I'd been doing all of that and much much more

They put a filling in without asking you?! That’s terrible!

Fusioluxe · 24/01/2019 21:03

Why the filing? Was that anything to do with the oatcake?

Illstartexercisingtomorrow · 24/01/2019 21:03

A temporary filling. No need to be quite so dramatic. Although yes they should have at least mentioned before doing it.

Gaballout · 24/01/2019 21:34

Yes a temporary one, honestly I need to find a better dentist they just rush in.

He said "oh this must hurt" while doing it but honestly it really doesn't. They've been trying to get me to have a filling that fell out over 20 years ago replaced for years. I had one good dentist over 10 years ago look at it and say it's healed and best left alone. It's not caused any problems and a back tooth so I'm fine with leaving it alone.

So I'm sceptical of these dentists that want to drill all the time.

It does seem to suit them to charge again for a checkup and then to drill it. Even then it will probably only last 5 years and need to be done again.

What's the worst if I just leave it until it actually causes any problems? Only think thats making me think I should do something is that it's a front tooth. The other one is at the back so no big issue if it's extracted

If I get a stubborn bit of something I have been known to put drawing ointment on it. Tastes like shit and is possibly toxic but I've never come to any harm.
