I have very mild hearing loss (relevant)
I am taking some new university courses. All of my professors are absolutely amazing.
However, I have one who is very soft-spoken and whom I have some trouble hearing. I've already started sitting towards the front, but it is still difficult to hear everything she says.
I don't know how to ask her to try to speak louder? I really don't want to hurt her feelings at all, but this is awkward! I'm also not sure whether to send her an email about it or talk with her in person. Thoughts?

It’s not going to hurt the lecturer’s feelings. I’d make an appointment and explain the problem in person as that way you demonstrate that your hearing loss is mild. Follow up with an email so that’s it’s on record. Just say you’re finding it difficult to hear them but are fine will all other lecturers and ask them what they think the solution is. That way you’re not going into it saying, ‘you talk too quietly’.

If the problem persists maybe you could make contact with the university who will be able to help with any extra support you may need. Often there’s lots of help avalible for disabled students but you have to seek it out.

Just be straight with her. I can't see any reason why this would hurt her feelings. Also I wouldn't email her. Definitely talk face to face. She will probably understand even more when she sees how difficult it is for you.

Just tell her! No big deal. She won't mind.

Believe me she won't be offended. Just tell her at the end of lecture one day if she has a spare minute or two. She'll be more concerned that you haven't been able to hear her!

Thanks all for your replies. I'll mention it to her the next time I see her. I'm already in contact with my university's disability office for another more profound disability, so can use them for support if need be. But I'm glad to know none of you think she would take offense.

I do lots of public speaking and I’d never be upset if someone explained they couldn’t hear me. If I’m making the effort to stand at the front and speak I want you to enjoy every single word Smile
