Is a down filled duvet worth the £££s?

I have an attic bedroom with no roof insulation, just old slates, and I wake up practically frozen to the bed.

Toying with the idea of a down filled duvet and have seen some for £50 in tkmaxx.

Will it be worth the money and keep me warm? Sad

OMG, woke up this morning realising that I’d gone and bought a Baavet last night on the spur of the moment having read this thread.

You won’t regret it.

“You can't get ethical down. They literally pick the feathers off birds. Google it.”

I did, and found that it is not legal to pluck feathers from live birds in tne EU. And that even a vegan organisation concedes that the vast majority of feather and down from China (no ethical standards on anything, ever) is a slaughterhouse product, I.e comes from dead birds.

does "ethical down" just mean they kill the bird to make the duvet? are those geese part of the food chain? I'd love to see how companies could certify their down isn't live plucked however illegal it may be in the EU (but not china or neighbouring euro countries)
(I have wool pillows but have never seen a wool duvet - we have silk, which is utterly lovely)

I want a baavet. Seriously thinking of investing in one.

youaremyrain · 26/01/2019 10:41

@upandupandup how warm are you now?

upandupandup · 26/01/2019 16:17

@youaremyrain I am now so warm I have had to revert to naked sleeping! I wake up sweating (but it is hard to get out of bed)

Down is the warmest, get a 13.5 tog and I guarantee you'll be warm as toast. Ignore anyone who suggests synthetic, ugh.

youaremyrain · 26/01/2019 16:37

@upandupandup that's great! I'm so pleased for you!

I have two wool baavet duvets, one is normal and one is super heavy winter (500-550g) I've been using the winter one the last few nights and I keep having to throw it off as I get so warm Smile
