I'm in my early 20s and doing my lessons still

Have you passed your test, If so, how old was you?

17 first time. I did have a course of lessons, but I had the advantage of my parents letting me practise in their car for weeks (with one of them beside me). I think this makes a huge difference. More time practising (for free), building up confidence, etc. Neither of my DC (in their early 20s, late teens) want to learn, though, and we live in London, so no need. We don't have a car, so they wouldn't be able to practise.

Only clicked on this to see if someone had come on to correct the title grin

So did I Grin

  1. Could afford the lessons before, but couldn't afford to buy and run a car. Only learnt to drive when DH moved in and brought his car with him.

Hi OP,

We're just going to move this one over to Chat for you now - but do get in touch if this is a problem at all.

18, took me a year to pass.

DramaAlpaca · 19/01/2019 13:53

I was 21. Failed my test twice aged 18, so gave up learning until I finished university then had another round of lessons & passed. No theory test then, it was 34 years ago.

Late 20s. I went from 6th form, to a university that effectively banned cars, so didn't bother learning until a good few years after I'd graduated and I'd saved up a bit of money.

20mins around a small village with no roundabouts & only 1 road where you could get into 5th gear

My theory consisted of:

What is the sequence of traffic lights?

& what do these signs mean:

I readily admit that I'd never pass the test nowadays but I'm actually a good driver.

My DSis passed her test at age 35 last year after about 4 attempts

EastMidsGPs · 19/01/2019 14:11

The day after my 18 birthday.

Had been given driving lessons as my 17th birthday present from my parents ... although they cost under a fiver in those days

Glad I learnt at that age and will be encouraging my DC to do same (DD turns 17 later this year and can't wait to get started!)

Parker231 · 19/01/2019 14:14

17 - wanted to get it out of the way before going to Uni.

lanbro · 19/01/2019 14:16

Passed 3 months after my 17th birthday - the bus service was terrible where I lived so was desperate to pass and get my independence. I was the first year that had to do theory tests but it was very easy!

Emma145 · 19/01/2019 14:17

27 passed first time but was automatic licence

TorchesTorches · 19/01/2019 14:20

21 as my uncle gave me 10 lessons as a 21st birthday present. I wasnt allowed to practise in any other car (ie my dad's) , so i paid out of my holiday job money for another 20 lessons.

It really grates on me when my dad refers to my uncle as paying for my driving lessons as i paid for 2/3rds of them from my own money. Also grates when people say they only had a few lessons, when they had lots of practice in a parents car.

Clearly I haven't got over this in the 30 years since this happened!

BagofTeeth · 19/01/2019 14:20

Never had a lesson and I'm late 30s now. Just no need for it where we live as we have great public transport links and I walk anywhere locally. DH drives as he needs the car for work but we use public transport most of the time when we're going anywhere together.

PortiaCastis · 19/01/2019 14:22

17 passed first time. We live very rurally and I'd been out with my Dad an awful lot before signing up for a couple of lessons and taking my test

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 19/01/2019 14:23

I was 24. I first took lessons when I was 18/19 and was ready for the test but didn't take it as I hated driving so much.

My dds passed at 17 and 18 respectively

notahiker · 19/01/2019 14:25

No theory test

No power steering

No sat Nav

Proper driving 😂

maddiemookins16mum · 19/01/2019 14:27

17, no theory test, it was my 2nd attempt. It was 1982, in a green Ford Fiesta.

onetwopyjamacrew · 19/01/2019 15:05

17 and a few days, did my theory and test within a couple days of each other its a good job i passed my theory. Was very lucky as my dad taught me how to drive on his land from the age of 14 so I just needed one long lesson on how to pass the test

Juanbablo · 19/01/2019 16:37
  1. I just passed at the end of October.
papayasareyum · 19/01/2019 16:47

32 and I should've done it many years before. The inability to drive is a real pain in the ass, unless you live in central London or another big City (and rarely leave it)
