He's had a nasty cold and now a barking cough particularly at night. Wondering what I can buy tomorrow to give him

Give bronco stop a try tastes absolutely vile so id keep that quiet 😬 but it works wonders

HelmutFrontbut · 18/01/2019 23:39

Bit random but heard oregano tea is good, as is fresh pineapple. The pineapple has to be close to the hard bit in the middle.

No idea if it works, it's a Greek remedy!

Lemon, honey and thyme

Onion syrup-googke it.

Cup of chopped onion next to the bed also helps.

Orangepear · 18/01/2019 23:50

Humidifier! Brilliant for coughs.

Overseasmom100 · 19/01/2019 07:34

You shouldn't really use a cough suppressant on a cough. The body is coughing for a reason. Ask the pharmacist for a cough mixture that contains guaifenesin - this will help to loosen up any phlegm and make it easier to cough up. You don't want to keep that in the body with a cough suppressant as that could lead to chest infections, etc.

vanitythynameisnotwoman · 19/01/2019 07:46

Agree - don't use cough suppressant on a child's cough. There are some indications in adults.

I'd use steam and menthol at bed time - you can buy menthol crystals from a decent sized pharmacy, dissolve in boiling water, and inhale. Will sooth the larynx/pharynx which is where the "bark" is coming from. And ibuprofen rather than paracetamol, if he's ok to take it.

Vicks on the soles of his feet then socks over.

Yes it really does work. 😁

Hellohah · 19/01/2019 08:04

I second the Vicks on the feet, and a spoonful of honey before bed. Always worked a treat with DS.

sandgrown · 19/01/2019 08:08

Buy plain glycerine from Boots ( it's an ingredient in many cough medicines) . Put a spoonful in a glass of water and sip at regular intervals.

fitflopqueen · 19/01/2019 08:12

Best quality manuka honey you can afford, have on a dry biscuit or similar so it isn’t swallowed too fast. Just a teaspoon at a time, apparently it helps tremendously

ChilliMum · 19/01/2019 08:26

Also came to recommend Vicks on the soles of the feet before bed, cover with socks. It really does work.

Vargas · 19/01/2019 12:15

Humidifier is the best thing. Failing that, a steamy bath.

Overseasmom100 · 19/01/2019 14:09

Ooo ok will try the vicks as so many recommend it. Yes have been doing steamy baths and olbus oil on pillow

I suffer every year with a night cough. The only thing that works is Pholcodiene linctus. It's a cough suppressant but when you have not slept for more than 20 mins for a week you need it. My youngest had a terrible cough over Xmas, was not chesty at all (had been to the docs to check) and doc said a couple of night with cough medicine won't hurt, it will enable sleep which would help heal. She was also given an inhaler.....

bigbluebus · 19/01/2019 16:44

There's been some research doing the rounds on Facebook this week that says chocolate is good to prevent coughing as it put some sort of coating on the throat. Not sure how well it works but I'm sure your teenager will be prefer it to foul tasting cough linctus!

Overseasmom100 · 19/01/2019 22:24

Thanks everyone. Vicks is at the ready...will try this first

Echo the Broncho Stop, amazing stuff! It’s made me more phlemgy, but at least it’s all coming out and I’ve practically stopped coughing.

whiteworld · 19/01/2019 23:30

Chop up an onion and put it in his room. Stops coughing.

Agree with vick and socks.

Buttercupsandaisies · 19/01/2019 23:32

This type of cough is so typical of the virus going round at the minute - a dry hoarse but non productive cough. I've had it two weeks and nothing works. Easing the last few days - dr said that everyone has it and to leave alone

Hen2018 · 19/01/2019 23:36

None of the above will work.

MyFriendGoo5 · 19/01/2019 23:40

Robitussin.

Tesco pharmacy have it behind the counter........I'm not usually one for cough medicines as I don't think they do much but that stuff does work.

Overseasmom100 · 20/01/2019 00:09

Vicks is rubbed on both feet and socks on Smile fingerscrossed.
