Insuring my son on my car (learner).

I was about to put my son on my insurance so he can learn to drive with me. I've found out they don't cover under 25's due to higher risk.

Have you any experience you can share?
I'm hoping to insure him in my little run around until he passes his test.

Have any of you found reasonable quotes? Where should I start?

My renewal quote with my regular insurance company, just for me, is under £200 for fully comprehensive.
I'm thinking it could be a lot more with a learner on board.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Try Marmalade. They insure learners on a separate policy and it doesn't affect your own insurance premium at all. You can pay for a month at a time, which is great if you don't know how long it will take til they pass. I've used it with 3DC so far. Sure it's about £75 a month.

I actually found learner insurance wasn't too bad - he took out his own,way cheaper than adding to mine, found it online, not very expensive. ( Sorry don't know who with).

Once he'd passed, I enquired about adding him to mine - my insurer declined. Found another - 2,800 as occasional driver!

Veygo

As others have said, you don’t insure a learner on your own policy, you need a separate learner policy.

Marmalade are the best known, but there are others - we did ours through Aviva (search Aviva learner), and there are one or two other companies.

You pay for anything from a week to 5 months. It’s still not cheap, but better than putting them on yours!

Another vote for marmalade here. My insurer also declined to insure under 25 and this was a standalone policy that did not affect my policy. I think we also went with Aviva (Learner Driver Policy) for a few months. So take a look there as well

Marmalade cost me about £60 a month when my daughter was learning. My insurance policy is about £200 a year to have added her on my policy would have been £2k!

I’ve found veygo good too. You do it on top of your existing insurance, and you can book it for hours, days or weeks. You can also do it after he passes his test.

DC1 has a Veygo policy. V flexible & won't affect your own insurance if they do have a scrape.

Livedandlearned2 · 18/01/2019 22:45

Veygo is brilliant

Learner driver wasn't too bad, only a small amount on top. Once passed Shock

Our insurance was due in December. She passed at the end of August. They wanted another £1000 just for September to December.
We moved insurers and got a black box and that brought it down to around an extra £700 for the year. But even so Shock

Thank you all, you've been really helpful.

I'm going to renew my insurance as is and insure him separately. Then we can pick and choose months to fit in around other things.
