Songs to sing at bedtime

Ilovecrumpets · 18/01/2019 20:44

My youngest DS (4) loves to be sung to before he goes to bed - I actually enjoy it as it winds me down from a busy day too, so it’s become our little ritual.

We have certain songs I always sing but it would be good to add a few others! Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for lullabies or general songs.

Our favourites atm are Lullabye by Billy Joel ( although that often brings a tear to me!) and the first verse of you are my sunshine plus some more traditional lullabies.

Any suggestions welcome! Or just suggestions of other lovely songs to share with children.

We always just sung Nursery Rhymes, Counting songs etc.

This is 'our' song.
We used to sing it every night.
Great video too.
Smile

The Skye Boat Song ("speed bonny boat like a bird on the wing, over the sea to Skye").
Also Don McLean's Vincent - focusing on the first part "Starry Starry Night" rather than the closing suicidal lines.. Wink

DD is 5 and just has outgrown this but we liked Morningtown ride by The Seekers, Moon river and Dream a little dream by The Mamas and the papas.

Since she was born, we've sung:.

The Book of Love

Hush little baby/Mockingbird

You Are My Sunshine

MWNA · 19/01/2019 09:03

She's 4 now and loves Book of Love especially much.

Freight train
Wild Rover
Other traditional folk songs - that’s what I used to sing, because my dad sang them to me.

We sing anything and everything we can think of, as it often takes so long for them to fall asleep! Don McLean's American Pie is a good one as there are so many verses! Elvis is good, eg Can't Help Falling in Love and Always on my Mind, and lots by the Beatles.

Check out the Thula Mama cds by Helen Yeomans for lovely acapella lullabies

Thanks for all the suggestions - will definitely check them out (we also currently do Skye boat song and dream a little dream). He likes to learn the lyrics and sing with me - it’s quite interesting actually paying attention to song lyrics I’ve never reall thought of!

@FaithInfinity my eldest has never been bothered by songs so I hope my youngest continues for a while.

I sing "Somewhere Only We Know" to mine.

TulipsInbloom1 · 19/01/2019 11:21

Oh and our kids love the lyrics in Million Dreams from Greatest Showman

SprinkleOfInsanity · 19/01/2019 11:27

'My little buttercup' from The Three Amigos film Blush possibly with even most gusto, if that's possible. Not exactly calming, but gives us all the good feels.

We used to sing windmill in old Amsterdam, I like the rhymes in it and it's not too lively so fine for bedtime.

sollyfromsurrey · 19/01/2019 11:51

@FaithInfinity we also sang/sing Dream a little Dream and Moon River! Also Funny Valentine.

Enb76 · 19/01/2019 11:55

My daughter is 10 and I still sing to her. Mostly ‘Dream a little dream of me’ or a sort of weird version of ‘Go to sleep little baby’ from O Brother. I’ll be sad when she grows out of it.

AmphetamineGazelle · 19/01/2019 11:56

We sing The Red Flag, I'm forever blowing bubbles and the Internationale. My grandmother used to sing them to me much to my mother's annoyance.

UrbaneSprawl · 19/01/2019 15:56

Gazelle my mum used to sing me “You’ve gotta go down and join the Union”.

is the perfect bedtime song, as far as I am concerned.
