My fitbit is untrustworthy.

It says I have walked 10k steps today. Blatantly have NOT - but it counts steps when I shift gears when driving!

Not sure if this relationship is going to work out.

Mine too. I ignore it mostly. Must get a normal watch.

Jenda · 18/01/2019 18:55

I recently babysat a friends newborn which consisted of sitting on the sofa and got 6k, bum patting!

Mine counts changing gears as steps as well and won't count steps when I'm pushing my daughter's wheelchair/supermarket trolley so it's flipping useless. Looks nice though Hmm

I haven't tested it when pushing a buggy, must do that soon.

I'm thinking of giving it to my dd, who walks up and down flights of stairs each day at school.

I have a free pedometer app on my phone, and the two numbers are different by thousands of steps!

I dont trust the number of steps with my fitbit but I use it as a gauge in the sense of I always do roughly 8-10k steps so if I have a day of only 5k I know I havent moved enough and if I hit 11-12k I know I have had a good day!

dementedpixie · 18/01/2019 19:26

Mine doesn't seem to register if I'm in the supermarket. It doesn't count flights of stairs if carrying anything up them. I wear mine on my right wrist so doesn't count gears. Grating cheese works though

JockTamsonsBairns · 18/01/2019 19:36

Mine lies about how I've slept. Went to bed last night about midnight, and got up when the alarm went off at 7, so I don't know what nonsense it's on about here Confused

My fitbit is untrustworthy.
ShowOfHands · 18/01/2019 19:44

Mine is pretty accurate with steps. I try to trick it but no amount of waving my arms works. It is hopeless with sleep however. As soon as my heart rate dips below 55, it assumes I'm asleep. Given my resting heart rate is 52, it's mightily confused.

nikkylou · 18/01/2019 19:48

Switch wrists or tell fitbit it's your dominant hand so it is less sensitive.

Although I only get say 10 / 15 and hour max even on my left arm when driving.

I remember reading that you might get little miscalculations like that, as it tries to make sure it picks up the little steps you do when your pottering round the kitchen for example.

And you will get false negatives (where is doesnt record legitmate stepa) as well as false positives so it should balance out in the end.

If you're getting massive amounts though for really small amounts then may be try resetting it.

My Apple Watch thinks I walk miles of an evening. I'm actually sitting on the sofa with my crochet - one stitch = one step....

Redpriestandmozart · 18/01/2019 20:02

When I am self propelling my wheelchair my fitbit records over 10,000 steps so for that alone I love it :)

Summerisdone · 18/01/2019 20:11

Maybe just switch your watch to your right wrist when driving. If you have it registered to your non dominant hand then the unusual usage of said hand will be registered as steps as opposed to just hand movement

Igottastartthinkingbee · 18/01/2019 20:14

Glad it’s not just me. Mine thought I’d done 10 steps before I’d even got out of bed one morning! It’s also very hit n miss with exercise too, miscounts my swimming lengths and thinks I’m on my bike when I’m out for a brisk walk!!! Frustrating. I wish I’d got a Garmin now.

Witchend · 18/01/2019 20:16

Ds finds his step count goes up considerably when he does his drums. Grin

JustAnotherManicUsername · 18/01/2019 20:16

My DC's counts each twist of a Rubik's cube as a step.

winterisstillcoming · 18/01/2019 20:20

Agree re : non dominant hand. I strap mine to a belt loop or bra strap. Much more accurate.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 18/01/2019 20:31

Just stacked up 100 steps drinking a beer Grin

Thiswayorthatway · 18/01/2019 20:32

My fitbit used to add steps when winding DC as a baby.
