Mothercare Closing Down in Londonderry Northern Ireland

I’ve just found out that my local Mothercare is closing down in 2 weeks time in my home town of Londonderry. Very sad as I’ve bought everything there for my 3 kids. Went in there today and there’s at least 30% off everything so I picked up a few outfits as I could see everything is selling fast. I’m going to tell as many of my friend as I can as the car seats & pushchairs looked fantastic value.

Very sad news- I’m never out of the Sprucefield store. Would have thought that particular outlet would have benefitted from people crossing the border from Donegal for the cheaper prices.

Separately, I didn’t realise anyone still called the city Londonderry anymore- I’m a Belfast unionist and even we just say Derry!

Bangor closing too.

It is a shame but I'm not sure how they are sustainable. Sprucefield is my local branch and the upstairs just seems such a waste of space. They do have some nice clothes but my kids are towards the upper end of their age range and they never seem to have those sizes in stock. I hope they do manage to keep going, their staff are often very knowledgeable and helpful.

Newbury and reading too. Oxford already shut.

Fortunately my DD now getting too old as they only do up to age 5 now.

Sad times.

Sad news, but perhaps it may be a result of some people in the Derry area going to more upmarket places for baby clothes, so a strange form of peace dividend as it were.

The Brighton one has shut too. Not sure where people are meant to go now to buy cots/prams etc.

I always thought Mothercare was extortionate for baby clothes when my kids were small. It's a long time ago now, had it got cheaper in recent years?

The same places they have been going instead of mothercare that has resulted in mothercare having to close.

Guildford closing too. I never found the staff helpful or that interested when my kids were younger, which can’t have helped them. Maybe I was unlucky.

@IloveMaxiBond

Thank you for taking it in the spirit in which it was intended!

I do love a NI thread.

Me too slattern! There are a lot more of us now than there used to be on MN.

It’s still a dear hole tbh- the non branded stuff is expensive enough, and then the Mylene Klass/ Little Bird stuff is only marginally cheaper than Boden/Frugi but not as good quality.

I buy a decent amount for dd (15 months) there but only when they have their regular 20% off clothing offers on. You’d be mad to pay full price.

BerryTowel · 18/01/2019 18:04

It's Derry.

Now that's a classic Northern Irelandism.Grin
