My airer has broken, what should I replace it with?

As title says, my trusty minky airer (upright concertina, shaped like two 'X' on top of each other) has been on its last legs for a while but has now totally broken. Sonic can buy a shiny new one! But what do I go for?

  • a Lakeland heated number?
  • a like for like replacement?
  • a basic stand alone airer in a different shape?
  • a Sheila maiden?
  • a tumble dryer and basic airer? (Currently have a washer dryer but rarely use the dryer).

Radiator airers are a no go due to the radiators we have.

They don't make airers like they used to. I have a 16yo x wing type of airer, really heavy duty, but the plastic coating is peeling, and I can't find a sufficiently sturdy replacement for it. I did buy a concertina airer but one of the kids crashed into it and that was the end of it. Reviews of all the others I like the look of predict a similar fate. Thankfully, my tumble dryer does most of the heavy lifting and I just use it for delicates, most of the year. It's a great shape to consider if you have space for it (and no big, clumsy kids) though. The wings can be totally flat or almost vertical.

Like for like..

Troels · 17/01/2019 16:44

I have the one thats 2 x's on top of each other, nice a cheap from Home Bargains. I've always fancied a heated airer. Aldi (or maybe it was Lidl) had them in stock recently.
We still use the dryer once the clothes are pretty much dry on the airer, we throw them in for a quick tumble and then fold.

sleeplessinsomewhere · 17/01/2019 16:44

Lakeland drier!

Troels · 17/01/2019 16:45

Mines 3 x's on top of each other not 2, it's across the room at the moment with 6 billion loads on it.

Freco010 · 17/01/2019 16:52

I’ve just rought the heated airer that’s on wowcher at the moment. It’s 29.99 and it’s brilliant. Also stores away small so I put it behind sofa when not in use but is really sturdy when up.

Whatdoyouknowwhenyouknownowt · 17/01/2019 16:55

Just bought a concertina one from Argos, think it was £15. Takes 20kg, well pleased with it. Way more solid than the other one I have.

Petitprince · 17/01/2019 17:00

We have one of those that hangs from the ceiling. It is amazing.

Endofrelationship · 17/01/2019 17:05

Petitprince I am tempted, but just wonder where to put it, you can't move it around like the others. We have a Victorian house so would fit asthetically though.

And no utility room. Yet.

Over the bath ones are good - not pretty in the bathroom, but effective.

This Dunelm one is cheap & cheerful

You can use them straight as well as in a V, so you can move them out of the way when you need the bath. (& one of the reviews says they use it over the stairs - what a good idea!)

CurcubitaPepo · 17/01/2019 17:14

Lakeland heated!!

GiantKitten · 17/01/2019 17:14

I also have the 3-tier minky airer but don't often use it (we're a 3 adult household so we have less laundry than with small children Smile)

And things like jeans, towels & bedding hang over the banister on the landing.

GruffaloStick · 17/01/2019 17:15

I have this it holds loads and has been going for 4+ years. I can put a full load on one half and fold the other half back if I don't need to use it all

Perch · 17/01/2019 17:16

If you have a bit of money to spend, get an Ebac dehumidifier and air filter. It has a laundry drying setting too. We’re going into the third winter with ours. Weirdly, we just do not get sick anymore, ever. You cannot believe the amount of moisture it takes from the air! I also have a condenser tumble drier that is a godsend for the bigger stuff .

Petitprince · 17/01/2019 17:17

Ours is in the kitchen. It makes the most of the heat up there and things are dry in a few hours. Beware of the company Pulleymaid though - their customer service is awful.

Minimonkeysmum · 17/01/2019 17:17

I'm eyeing up one of these. My friend has one and it's great for hanging stuff on the wall, looks lovely folded up and can even be taken off the wall if you want to move it around. Just need to convince my husband (& I've checked and apparently will work ok a stud wall with the right screws etc). www.juluhome.co.uk/

I also have a heated aired, which is great too!

VictoriaBun · 17/01/2019 17:20

Yes get a pully maid.

Endofrelationship · 17/01/2019 17:24

GiantKitten we've just spent a fortune on a new bathroom, no way am I spoiling it!

Petitprince do you not end up with clothes smelling of cooking? The kitchen would be ideal for us.

Basic airer and dehumidifier combo. I only put clothes on a 600 spin as I don't iron, and they still dry within 12 hours.

SciFiScream · 17/01/2019 17:43

I bought this last year because I went through several x-shaped airers. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00MA2WHRA?psc=1&ref=ppxpoppmobbbpd_title

It's expensive but has been worth it. It's on wheel so I can move it easily and the racks all fold up. I can get 2 loads on it. Plus dry really long things by only unfolding the top shelf on one side.

elfyears · 17/01/2019 17:58

I have a Lakeland - i get one full load of clothes on it per day. It takes 24hours to dry the lot without moving anything. (Clothes for 2 adults and 1 year old twins who destroy an item of clothing per second)

I also have this airer from b&q which is very study and very handy as it collapses so small when not in use.

borntobequiet · 17/01/2019 18:05

I did a load of washing this morning, it’s been on an ordinary folding airier in the bathroom with the dehumidifier on its washing setting and it’s pretty much dry. Work dresses/tops so 600 rpm spin.

theconstantinoplegardener · 17/01/2019 18:05

The dryer function of our washer-dryer broke last year but although we are a family of five, we haven't needed to replace it. We have a lakeland heated airer which is fab and a normal, non-heated airer and all of our laundry dries on them (& outside in the summer). We have had to go to the laundrette a couple of times for quick turnaround of bedding when the kids have been sick, but apart from exceptional circumstances like that, we haven't used a dryer.
