Does anyone work in mental health? Informal patient on run

Hello, have name changed for my privacy.

My sister has been in a psychiatric hospital for a few weeks following a breaking down and 2 suicide attempts (One on hospital grounds)

She has now gone AWOL from the hospital after telling them she wanted a walk.

She was self admitted, so informal and not sectioned so she was allowed out (despite buying the tablets she ODd on whilst being let out)

I called the ward and the basically said she's allowed to leave.

She's send me multiple messages saying she wants to kill herself/buy razors.

Any ideas what I can do?

I feel she needs to be sectioned buy no one seems interested :(

Phone the police now, report her as a missing person, sounds like she is high risk.

mumonashoestring · 17/01/2019 13:04

Yep, police and report her as being at immediate risk. Does she have a keyworker/crisis contact?

YouCantCenaMe · 17/01/2019 13:06

She's been waiting for a care coordinator since admittance.

Social services won't help as she is under the care of the hospital.

I'm just going round in circles and no one seems to give a shit.

She's run away because they said they were going to discharge her. Days after a suicide attempt.

999 or 101?

999 and emphasise to the call handler she has already had 2 serious suicide attempts and you strongly believe she will take her own life.

YouCantCenaMe · 17/01/2019 13:14

Ok. Thankyou

The hospital has rang the police.

Glad to hear it. I would call 101 myself too. I have some experience in these matters and would suggest strongly that you add what you know to the information at hand.

CmdrIvanova · 17/01/2019 13:28

Also I would like to reassure you that the overwhelming majority of people reported missing are found safe. I hope your sister is found and given help Flowers

almutasakieun · 17/01/2019 13:29

When police find her she'll probably be sectioned.

YouCantCenaMe · 17/01/2019 14:16

She's bought a knife and is selfharming in the street. I think she's going to be sectioned.

Oh op no advice here but thinking of you and your sister, it's so sad it's come to that.

YouCantCenaMe · 17/01/2019 14:21

I'm just mad.

I'm mad at the whole system.

She needs help and no one is helping her. They just keep letting her out to do this.

Thinking of you and your sister op Flowers

Pandamodium · 17/01/2019 14:29

Hospitals can be shite and I'm speaking as a patient.

I've seen extremely ill patients appeal section 1 and 2's despite being very ill and win.

I hope she gets some help even in voluntary she should not have been allowed to walk out in that state.

I hope she gets the help she needs Thanks

NolongerAnxiousCarer · 17/01/2019 14:43

The system is awful, DH had multiple suicide attempts before being sectioned and then disappeared as soon as discharged from hospital. It's so so hard to get someone the help they need. I hope they find her soon, the police will take her straight back to the hospital for reassessment. DH recovered well once he finally got the right help, I hope your sister does too.

YouCantCenaMe · 17/01/2019 16:00

The police found her self HARMING with Stanley knives.

They took her back to the informal ward and she is STILL allowed out

This is after an over dose and buying blades whilst allowed out.

They have no plans to section her and are still planning a discharge for Monday (she Will be homeless on release too)

Why won't they help her

OP posts:
chaosisaladder · 17/01/2019 16:16

They may have deemed that she has the capacity to make these decisions. However it is v poor care to not have a good discharge plan in place, such as accommodation. She should not be discharged to nowhere

YouCantCenaMe · 17/01/2019 16:17

All she's been told is to make her way to the town hall and present as homeless.

She can't even be trusted to go to the shop.

Rang the local council again and they can't help.

I don't know where to turn

Poor girl can you call her mental health community worker if you know who it is or social services adult safeguarding team. Mind may also be able to help if you call them.

MyDcAreMarvel · 17/01/2019 17:05

Does she have bpd? If so hospitals are of little benefit. Theraputeic communities and outpatient DBT are proven treatments.

YouCantCenaMe · 17/01/2019 17:08

She doesn't have a community worker. She has nothing.

I rang MASH and they said she's the hospitals problem.

They still haven't assigned her anyone to help.

OP posts:
YouCantCenaMe · 17/01/2019 17:08

She does have BPD. But she is suicidal, and in need. It's not just her BPD playing up

OP posts:
Bombardier25966 · 17/01/2019 17:23

Do you have a helpful MP? They can make someone at the MH Trust take responsibility before it's too late. Will her GP speak up for her?

They'll do anything they can to avoid sectioning because it is more costly, especially because of the right to aftercare (there's no right after an informal admission).

I wish I had something more constructive to offer. This is just how abysmal mental health services are now after all the cuts.

MyDcAreMarvel · 17/01/2019 17:27

Inpatient treatment in a regular psychiatric unit is unlikely to benefit your sister and could make her worse and institutionalised. She needs targeted long term help.
