Size and age would help.

Are you a size 6 and 21 years old

Or a size 24 pensioner?

Thesuzle · 17/01/2019 10:15

Oh congratulations. How exciting.
If you are older think dress and matching same length light coat.
And shoes with enough heel to balance on without sinking into the lawn
Unless you have direct info that you will be introduced or are in Her maj’s Tent for tea, you wont get very near her..
But enjoy none the less

LardLizard · 17/01/2019 10:19

Thank you thesuzle, well I did wonder about heels as first i thought will need some smart wedges, if such a thing exists, I only seem to find fairly casual wedges
But after looking at photos of previous parties held there, a lot of the woman are wearing heels.

Formerbabe, sorry, that would be helpful, 40 size 12

Wedges are fine, heels will sink into the grass and be an absolute nightmare when juggling a plate of food with a drink! There are also limited chairs to sit down so they’ll likely be comfier for long periods of standing up. The dress code is normally bright clothes with a fascinator type hat; you don’t have to but you only get the chance once so may as well! Most ladies wear knee length floral type dresses, but of course could be trousers etc if you’re more comfortable in them- and a headband with a small detail on if you don’t fancy going all out. Depending where you stand when they walk to the tent you might get close!

LondonBelongsToMe · 17/01/2019 10:26

everyone wears heels but you may want to factor in weather / softness of ground. A lot of people look like they've got their one good outfit out of the wardrobe that hasn't been worn since 1989 - it's very much not a fashion show so I wouldn't go out and buy anything new. Rent a hat to go with what you already have and make sure you've got something warm.

LardLizard · 17/01/2019 10:34

Yes I suppose it very much depends on the weather, regarding shoes and outfits
Really hope it will be dry
I will have a look a round the shops, any ideas of a good ones to start to look in, obv I can try John Lewis and Debenhams, we are not far from london so could head to anywhere there, I suppose I will keep looking at photos to get ideas of what people wear, I’ve never ever worn a hat or fascinator so will be interesting trying them on.

Sounds like fun! I've got nothing to add except that in the very unlikely event that I attended one I wouldn't be wearing high heels because I never do, so uncomfortable. Surely there are smart low or flat shoes or sandals for special occasions?

DontCallMeCharlotte · 17/01/2019 10:44

in the very unlikely event that I attended one

You'd be surprised - a very ordinary couple we know went twice in a week! The first was him for his work and the second time was for her work. Neither of them have particularly unusual jobs either.

notWORKzilla · 17/01/2019 10:50

If you want to have smarter wedges, LK Bennet do ones that look more polished as opposed to "summer in the greek islands". Like these

LardLizard · 17/01/2019 10:51

That seems unusual as the one stipulation we have been told is that you can only ever go once, perhaps they change the rules though

Oh I do like those wedges, and I like wedges in generally as so comfy, ideally I’d like some with perhaps a wooden heel

Puggles123 · 17/01/2019 10:54

Yes, usually you only get invited once- including as a guest or an invitee. I went last year and it was amazing, hope you have a fab time!

LardLizard · 17/01/2019 10:58

Thank you pug, did you stay over night? I’m thinking of booking a hotel and then a nice restaurant for the evening, as I’ve heard you don’t eat much, although the food pics I have googled, the cakes look very nice indeed
So perhaps a light early lunch
Then an evening meal

I lived a few stops away on the tube at the time so we went back to my flat, but even though it finishes in plenty of time to get transport back- I would have paid for somewhere to stay to make the most of the day and avoid rushing about :) it’s buffet style food but there are servers so although in theory could have a lot of food most people had a small selection haha.

LardLizard · 17/01/2019 11:14

Well I did wonder if you could go to the buffet more than once 🙊 I wouldn’t though

as Thuzal said but with the addition of a spare sandwich in your bag as her majesty is a little stingy with the cucumber sandwiches :-)

FadedRed · 17/01/2019 11:17

I went to one a couple of years ago. It was a scorching summer day which was better than rain as there is wasn’t much cover. Most of the women wore summer frocks and some had jackets (like wedding guests but not MoB). Some wore hats or fascinators, I wore a hat I bought from a charity shop because of the sun), but not all. I’d say about 30% didn’t wear anything on their head.
The first aid tent did a roaring trade in dressing foot blisters and lots of women ended up barefoot with plasters on their feet, carrying their unsuitable shoes! I wore some poshish wedges from Pavers and my feet were really comfy.
The food was lovely, fresh sandwiches, tiny little bagels, little cakes, ice cream. And you could go back for a second helping if you wanted.
Massive queue to get in, be warned.
I had a lovely day, even though i’m not really a royalist, it still felt very special. Got a handshake, which was unexpected!

Puggles123 · 17/01/2019 11:23

Haha you probably could, but the queue for the food is fairly long- id recommend queuing when they first open the buffet only because you don’t want to be stood in the tent when they begin their walk!

LardLizard · 17/01/2019 12:27

Oh thanks I will check out pavers

Oh I wouldn’t dare queue up twice

FadedRed · 17/01/2019 12:38

I went back for a second helping Blush

That's interesting. But it's definitely true - I've seen the pictures! And they're not the type to make that sort of thing up.

TheFaerieQueene · 17/01/2019 16:42

I’m going in May too LardLizard. See you there 😉
