Starting whole milk week before 1

My LG is one next Wednesday and we've just run out of formula. A tub usually lasts us about 2 weeks (she gets 2-3 bottles a day).

Is it ok to switch to blue milk a little before her first birthday? She's a great eater, she has 3 full meals a day and lots of snacks and has yet to turn down anything we give her. Just don't see the point in buying another big formula tub if we could just make the switch now?

It would probably be fine.
But I would just get another tub of formula and use that until finished. She doesn't need whole milk the day she turns one

Yes it is.

She's now one year old, in weeks. It's a guide line so it isn't introduced too early, but a month either side for any of this type of thing, is fine.

Of course its fine... nothing magically happens the second they turn one.

KatnissMellark · 17/01/2019 08:45

It will be absolutely fine. They don't magically change overnight at 1. I switched my son to pay milk at 11.5 months (allergic to cow's milk) as I was just so ill I couldn't breastfeed him, and there was no way he'd take hydrolysed formula which is notoriously minging. Dietician was completely happy with that.

45andahalf · 17/01/2019 08:46

It will be fine. She's not going to change significantly the moment she turns one!

Tinyteatime · 17/01/2019 08:46

Of course it’s fine. There’s not some magical thing that happens on the day of their 1st birthday. Mine went in to while milk about 11.5 months. Don’t waste money buying another box of formula.

KatnissMellark · 17/01/2019 08:46

Oat milk not pay milk- no idea what that is!

Birdsgottafly · 17/01/2019 08:46

I should have added. Just make sure the snacks/deserts etc are all fortified and you still give the vitamins.

Tinyteatime · 17/01/2019 08:46

X posted with everyone else!

MrsJamin · 17/01/2019 08:48

Yeah it'll be fine, ds gave up breastfeeding at 11.5 months and I couldn't be bothered to do all the learning about formula (he'd never had any) so he went straight to whole milk. From formula you might need to do some kind of half and half mix so your baby accepts it?

PoutySprout · 17/01/2019 08:48

She might not like it.

catnour · 17/01/2019 09:02

Ok thanks everyone!

Hadn't even thought about her not liking it. Will give her a wee drink after breakfast to see what she thinks.

I know several friends have gradually mixed it with formula to get them used to it. Formula/breast milk is very sweet compared to cows milk.

So 80/20 for a few days, then 60/40 etc

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 17/01/2019 09:06

It's fine. They don't need to be bang on 1 year old to drink it. She'll be fine.

ginandnappies · 17/01/2019 09:09

Definitely fine. I was told by my HV if I run out a week or so before don't bother buying again. So I didn't. :)

Camomila · 17/01/2019 09:39

Absolutely fine.

Its just not got quite as many vitamins as formula but its not harmful. Lots of 9/10 etc month olds have whole milk with their cereal in the morning.

catnour · 17/01/2019 19:05

She's not a fan of whole milk so have had to head out and buy some formula anyway Grin typical!

45andahalf · 18/01/2019 08:09

You’ll need to ween her onto it, if you want her to drink it eventually. So one or two ounces of whole milk mixed with five or six ounces of formula to start with, then gradually increase the amount of milk and decrease the formula. We had to do that with DS.

stoplickingthetelly · 18/01/2019 09:57

We did this. Just changed over when the formula was finished. Think it was probably about it 10 days or so before dd turned 1. We went straight on to cows milk with no problems at all.
