Does anyone know if you need one to work in retail?

Not usually

VonHerrBurton · 16/01/2019 23:13

I work in the retail sector of a charity and we have all had to have them done recently.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 16/01/2019 23:17

It's not me in the job role. Curious for another reason. It's not stock replenishing or a cashier but some contact with the public would be unavoidable.

Urgh dunno why I'm drip feeding! There is a person who was part of my community on the past who I know has an alarming criminal record and they are now working within the retail sector. Is this dodgy or wouldn't they not dbs check?

I guess it's rare. I've done a lot of retail jobs over the years. Never had to have a dbs check until just recently, company-wide, everyone had one.

I guess the person's references are what the employer would look at, making decisions based on normal reliability, suitability, experience etc.

I guess it depends what 'alarming criminal record' actually entails. Are you concerned this person may be a threat to the public, their colleagues or the security of the place they work?

AlexanderHamilton · 17/01/2019 00:17

DBS checks are carried out on those who will regularly be working unsupervised with children or vulnerable adults. Those working in financial services have to have them too.

Retail would not usually be covered.

Birdsgottafly · 17/01/2019 00:18

Oddly enough sexual Offences would be overlooked.

Fraud and shoplifting perhaps not.

However many ex prisoners do charity work, which is often in the shops and then go on to retail careers.

That's as well as specific programmes with ex offenders.

Do you not believe in rehabilitation then?

Queenofthedrivensnow · 17/01/2019 08:26

@Birdsgottafly thank you that's quite helpful.

Sex offender registration carries restrictions in the community though iirc usually about not being alone with women or whatever the victim profile is

Even ex crims need employment.......working inn retail seems a pretty safe bet to me. I think we'd be going down a.rocky road if all jobs were DBS checked.

LIZS · 17/01/2019 08:31

Unless it is the charity sector or moneyhandling probably not , although it is up to the employer.

AlexanderHamilton · 17/01/2019 10:07

Sex offender registration carries restrictions in the community though iirc usually about not being alone with women or whatever the victim profile is

Those restrictions would rarely include not working in retail. They may include not working anywhere without the approval of a supervising officer or not working with anyone under 18 or your victim and there may be an "exclusion zone" (usually the area where the victim lives or works.
